Advantages: Great neck. Real wood. It's a Fender! Disadvantages: Cheap pickups and machine heads.
The SquierAffinity Strat represents amazing value for money. For about a hundred quid you get a strat endorsed by Fender with a great neck. This is a guitar streets ahead of all those cheap Chinese copies (which you should definitely avoid!)? but it's not all good news, a couple of cheap components let an otherwise great guitar down.
There are hundreds of strat clones out there but all they do is form a mountain of plywood trash? forget them. There is only one decent copy of the Fender Strat and that is Fender's own Squier Strat with alder body and maple neck. I bought one recently to experiment on. It was only supposed to be a cheap guitar for me to practice setting up, adjusting the truss rod on etc. but I ended up loving it.
The Affinity is thinner than a standard strat and the first thing I noticed was how light it was ...
Advantages: Cheap, reliable and attractive. Perfect for beginners! Disadvantages: Sound quality is not the best for these class guitars and the tremolo can unstrung the guitar.
Features:
SquierAffinity Stratocasters body is made from alder. It has a maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard and twenty two frets. They are models with three single-coil Pickups, and models with two single-coil pickups and one humbucker.
The controls on the pickguard are Volume Control, Tone Control for the Neck pickup, and another Tone Control for the middle pickup. The pickup switch has five positions. The first position enables the bridge pickup, the second position enables the bridge and middle pickups, the third position enables the middle pickup, the forth position enables the middle and neck pickups and finally the fifth position enables the neck pickup.
The bridge features a synchronous tremolo, which I don't recommend touching it very often, because it will unstrung your guitar, and if you are beginner and don't have a digital ...
Advantages: Cheap, sounds good, plays well, available in lots of colours Disadvantages: a direct copy of a more expensive guitar
In my opinion this guitar is the best choice for beginners that you can buy, simply because it caters for everything a beginner needs very well.
You can achieve a surprisingly good tone out of these guitars which is very rare to accomplish on cheaper, highly manufactured guitars. The intonation is also very good and the guitar manages to cope with different string gages very well which is perfect for building up strength in your fingers.
I even have a friend who uses his Squier on a professional basis, with upgraded pickup's. He says it's a cheap alternative to achieving great tones like those far more expensive guitars.
Above all though I found the playability of the guitar to be the most impressive thing of all it's features, I was able to effortlessly glide up and down the neck which has a good feel to it. I was also able to learn ...
