Advantages Mercedes engines, bold styling

Disadvantages Limited servicing support

Price used £3820-£7420

Value
Lots of room for the money; more refined than most mid-market 4x4 models.

Costs
Diesels fuel-efficient but petrol models quite thirsty; parts and servicing dear.

Reliability
Mercedes engines hugely dependable if looked after; build quality not the best.

Driving
Switchable 4WD; direct steering, safe car-like handling; diesels ride fairly smoothly, but petrol cars are choppier.

Performance
GX220 is fastest in class; 2.3 is lively; old 2.9D is seriously underpowered; latest turbo-diesel is much better.

Comfort
Roomy with enormous load capacity but no load cover; trim materials look cheap; confusing controls/switchgear.

Image
Not for the shy and retiring; flash but odd looks; may do better as a Daewoo.

Safety
ABS on GSE/GLS/GX220; airbag option from 1997 (std on 2.3 GLS, 2.9 TD).
Security
Immobiliser only - get an alarm.

CarCheck
Body: Damage to lower body and underbody from off-road use
Engine/Gearbox: No problems reported so far; needs service history.

Servicing
6,000 miles (minor), 12,000 miles (full)

Warranty
Mechanical 3 years, bodywork 6 years
