hi everyone nice to meet you all . i am a dog show exibitor,a dog breeder, a dog groomer, a mother of one married living and enjoying life in cyprus and i hope we can all get along well. i am a very down to earth person.

All though i only had my saint bernard for 2 years it was the best 2 years of my life. we rescued our saint bernard from someone who had brought her over to cyprus with a male for breeding and showing and could no longer look after her anymore.. i had a call from a friend who had heard about her from another friend and although weary at first i decided to go and see her. so i got the number and arranged a meeting. we went to see her one hot afternoon in the middle of summer here in cyprus in 2007.
it was love at first sight. she came calmly over to me, sat in front of me and looked at me with those big beautifull eyes and my heart melted. i said "i will take her" after spending just ten minuites with her and the lady must have thought i was crazy to decide so quickly. but the the lady gave the dog over
to me and then we had the big job of getting her in the back of our mitsubishipick up truck. she only weighed 40 kg but she was so heavy. we got her home finally and she was so happy and so where we.
we then took her for grooming, de-ticked and de-flead treatment, a bath and trim. that was a job for the groomer that groomed her. nearly 3 hours later and 80 euro shorter in my pocket came out a big beautifull clean fluffy teady bear. Next to be done was the vet. we took her to get her innoculations and found out that she had ENTROPION, which is a rolling-in of the eyelids ,which she would need an operation to fix the problem of her eyes watering constantly.
also it took the vet three times to innoculate her as her skin was so thick the needle kept bending. after a stressfull hour at the vets we decided to let her be for a few months before the operation to settle in and to meet our 3 year old daughter sophia.
Do you want to know the funny thing? the dog was called sophia too, and when they met it was like they where soul mates. doing everything together. sleeping eating playing. They loved eachother. if sophia my daughter fell over sophia the dog was always at her side to help her up and lick away the tears. my daughter could even sit on the dogs back while eating a bowl of cereal and she would just sit there looking adoringly at her. five months passed and sophia the st bernard had put on 28 kg. she now weighed 68 kg and was happy healthy and loving life maybe for the first time. but her weight gain took a long time and kept fluctuating . we took her for her eye operation which went well and was a sucess.
Then shortly after sophia the dog went off her food. she would not eat a thing and with many trips to the different vets as no one could find out what was wrong. The last vet we went to see gave her a scan and we sadly found out she had stomach cancer. we where heart broken. my daughter all though i did not tell her what was wrong with the dog she knew. she stayed by her side when she had bad days and good ones . we tried treatment after treatment and my poor dog sophia was just getting sicker and sicker. the vet called me in one sunny afternoon and said that the dog was suffering and that in her opinion the dog should be put to sleep as the treatments where not working and the dog was just getting sicker. which i knew was true as the dog that was once 60 kg was now only 38 kg. after a big family discussion we decided it was best for her to not be in pain anymore.
so the sad part of my story. we took her to the vet where she was to be put to sleep. it was an awful day for us all. but my big beautifull bear would now not be in pain and in a better place. we miss her terribly. but we hope that we gave her a year she will never forget full of love happiness trust and hope. this review is dedicated to my big bear sophia the saint bernard who is terribly missed always loved and never forgotten.
I also recommend anyone getting a saint bernard that it will change their life forever to have such a gentle giant thats protective of the family, with not an ounce of aggression in their blood. although expensive to feed i have never owned a dog so loving and gentle and the cost was well worth the knowledge and time i spent with this wonderfull breed.

i know writing her story i had tears in my eyes and pain in my heart but she is in a better place now and i hope i will meet her again someday. sorry for your loss.

It's so, so sad when you have to say goodbye. The only consolation is that they are no longer suffering. My heart still breaks everytime I think about saying goodbye to my Golden Retriever last year. She had cancer too :0(
