I love to read, anything from the back of a cereal packet to the latest medical information, so when my hubby started having a few problems, (and I don’t mean me and the kids here!) I knew what I thought would be the answer to his problems!
During a particularly stressful period in our life he was found to have dangerously high blood pressure. Several visits to the doctor resulted in the correct level of medication being prescribed for him and the blood pressure slowly eased back to a safer level.
Naturally the shock of discovering that he was suffering from this, having shown no symptoms (as is so often the case in with this condition) knocked him for a six. It kind of makes you much more aware of your own mortality. As a result of this he became a bit “low”.
I wouldn’t say that he was depressed, in the clinical sense, more like thoroughly “peed off” and anxious, resulting in some low mood periods. It was then that I remembered reading the articles about St Johns Wort and I then wondered if that might help him? I visited the pharmacy section at my local supermarket on my next shopping trip and asked to have a word with the duty pharmacist about my hubby taking them.
Note here: Pharmacists are a wealth of knowledge and can often help with slightly more minor complaints. I would never see them in place of my doctor if I suspected something more serious, but they can work very adequately alongside your GP. Anyway back to the subject in hand.
I explained to her that I was considering getting some for hubby and told her that he was already taking anti-hypertensives (blood pressure lowering tablets) and wondered if St Johns Wort would be safe to take alongside his particular medication, she advised me that they would be fine.
Another note here: it is always advisable to tell the pharmacist of any other medication you are on as sometimes they cannot be taken with prescribed drugs. So I made my purchase safe in the knowledge that at least they could do him no harm (unlike living with me!! Ho ho;0))
This was almost 2 years ago now and I can honestly say that they have made a world of difference to him, I have seen a marked difference in his moods. This continues to be the case even now as we yet again go through another stressful time, namely a teenage son. Yes I know I should be grateful that I have sons and not daughters, when I think of the hell I put my poor mother thru, but let me tell you here and now, BOYS CAN BE JUST AS BAD!!
My husband takes one 500mg tablet each day at the same time as he takes both lots of anti-hypertensives (as well as his one-a-day cod liver oil capsule for his creaking joints!!) he is coping so much better these days. I make him sound like an old crock, don’t I? He isn’t he is only 40 something and a real workaholic, but life hits us all hard at times I guess?
And to all you doubting Thomas’s out there who think it is all in the mind (yes I was one too..) they do work. See we forgot to get some once and he went 2 weeks without one while I chased around searching for the particular brand he was on, and he was like the proverbial bear with a sore head! If I hadn’t have observed it for myself I would not have believed it.
Ok so where can you buy them? We got the first lot from the supermarket but then they decided that they were going to take them off the shelves, as there were some indications that they interacted with other medicines, (see what I said earlier).
They are back on the supermarket shelves now but please take my earlier advice and check with the pharmacist? There are various brand names about and beware they vary greatly in price. The ones we get are made by Day Lewis. They retail at a little over £4 for thirty 500 mg tablets. I have seen other better-known brands at nearly £12!! But these ones seem to suit so we will stick with them.
I would generally recommend these for low depression (if there is such a thing?) like what hubby was suffering from, general “peed offness”. I have heard that they are better than prescribed anti-depressants, but I would not agree to this, not knowing enough about the latter.
Any person who presents with obvious signs of clinical depression, or really feels that they just “can’t cope” PLEASE go see your doctor. At the end of the day they will hopefully know what is best for you, there IS help out there.
However if you are along the same lines of my partner then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend St Johns Wort (Wert? Wart?) as an alternative to you. And as a bit of a footnote I am reliably informed by a fellow Ciaoer that they work very well for some M.E sufferers too. Thank you again for reading my ops! Kazzie x
