Walking through a large department store with my Mum we stopped at the St Tropez display stand as I was telling her about how good the St.Tropez products were when all of a sudden my Mum was pounced upon by a black-clad rep and asked if she'd like to have her bare arms sprayed. Caught like a rabbit in headlights she had no choice but to agree and before she knew it she was perched on a very high stool and a crowd had gathered to point and watch.
I must admit - I was impressed. Ok, they used a compressed airgun to apply the product but it gave an instant tan, didn't smell chemically and dried in the blink of an eye. The rep explained how best to apply the product - you get best results if you 'spray and pat' with a St Tropez mitt (although a flannel would do the same job) and not 'spray and wipe / rub' or you'd end up streaky. Being the easily led person that I am, I bought a bottle (£30 for 270ml). Being of saner mind and having a firm hold of her handbag my Mum said "Thanks for the free tan" and then scuttled off.
Having used St Tropez products before I know you get best results if you exfoliate, moisturise, re-moisturise and then apply the product, however, on this occasion I came over all lazy so just moisturised my ankles and knees and decided to just apply the product and see how it went. After all, if it did go horribly wrong I'd only be patchy for about a week.
It was easy! Here's what you do to get best results:-
1) Prepare yourself beforehand. I know I didn't but it's probably best to shave, exfoliate, moisturise, re-moisturise ankles, knees and elbows before you spray. 2) Get yourself an old dry flannel - or a St Tropez mitt for £3.50 if you're feeling flush - for the dabbing. 3) Stand on a towel or inside your bath / shower cubicle. 4) Shake bottle, spray then ever so gently pat sprayed area to blend the product. 5) Wash bottoms of feet afterwards to prevent them going mahogany from any sprays that may have gone astray, but be careful not to wash off any freshly applied tan.
The spray comes out like watered down 'regular' St Tropez so it is a dark brown liquid which can stain light fabrics. Althought it is liquid it doesn't run so you are able to give a few good squirts before you have to dab to blend. Use a light hand for this or you'll end up dabbing off all that you've just put on. The idea is to blend the heavier droplets into the finer ones resulting in an instant even tan. I held the spray about 12" away as I found too close and the tan would be too dark, too far and it goes over the carpet.
It took me about 10 minutes to do my legs although I must admit that getting the backs of my thighs done took the longest - not because they are the size of a small country, but because it's quite tricky to twist yourself round to spray them. The spray is not an aerosol so it doesn't have a huge spray-range so I ended up re-spraying the sides of my thighs many times before I twisted myself enough to hit the thigh-backs full-on (although the bonus here is that I have accidentally 'airbrushed' myself so have given myself thinner looking thighs - hurrah!!). Apparently you can use the spray upside down and even spray your own back with it, although quite how you can do this without being a grand master at Yoga is completely beyond me so I decided to pass on the back - well, it's hardly the weather for halterneck tops right now!
After applying the tan my lower legs looked great, I could easily have put on a skirt and gone out as the tan was perfectly even and nice and golden. After the repeated sprayings of my thighs they looked a bit grubby but obviously practise makes perfect and the next time won't be so time consuming or involve quite so much twisting. Because of the 'spray on, pat off' application the tan dries so quickly you are able to get dressed and go straight out afterwards although as with all self-tanners, you will get some of the excess product rub off onto any grippy waistbands or light colours.
The next day the tan had developed into a slightly deeper golden tan and I was very impressed - considering I hadn't really prepared beforehand the results were good…..I just wish I'd bothered to apply the tan to my arms, face and stomach as I didn't half look weird down the gym the next day.
I'll be using this alongside the St Tropez mousse as I think it'll come in handy to cover any patchyness when the tan starts to fade, or quickly boost a tan for a night out.
