In a couple of days time, I am flying out to Turkey for my first holiday in 10 years. Being a 'strawberry blonde', I cannot sit out in the sun for hours on end, unless I am wearing a factor 10,000, as I burn sooo easily! Yet, I don't want to be the palest one on the beach or by the pool. So, the answer? Buy St. Tropez Self-tanning Lotion.
I first used this product about 4 years ago during the summer, as I wanted to wear shorts or mini-skirts, but my 'peely-wally' legs made people think of booking skiing holidays, they are so white! The first time I used it, I actually went to a beauty salon and had it applied professionally. I had to strip off and they provided me with a pair of black paper panties and a towel. I lay on the couch and, as soon as I saw the colour of the product, sat bolt upright and thought 'You're not coming near me with that stuff'!!
The lotion is a thick, gloopy, dark
brown, muddy looking cream. The Beautician assured me that this was a normal colour, and it enables a person to see exactly where it has (and has not) been applied. It took about 20 minutes to be applied to my whole body, and when I looked in the mirror all I could see was me, looking as if I had been in a mud-wrestling match! All I could see were streaks of brown all over me. How was I going to get home? Everyone would notice! But I had to get home, nonetheless. Luckily, I only had to walk 3 minutes to my door.
The Beautician told me to leave the product on for a minimum of 3 hours, but it would be even better if I left it on overnight. This is what I did. When I woke up in the morning, I was still streaky and brown, so I jumped straight into the shower, and watched the water turn a dark, muddy colour. @Oh my God', I thought, 'That's all my tan goung down the plug 'ole'! But, no.....my skin looked as if I had been on holiday in the Carribean! It was so smooth, soft and TANNED!!
Although the product had been streaky on my body, there were no streaks or dark areas at all. Anyway, I have tried many otger self-tanning products before, always ending up with that 'orange glow', But St. Tropez is DEFINITELY the one for me. It's so easy to apply on myself - and I just LOVE easy!!!!
Ok, here's how to use St. Tropez Tinted Self-tanning Lotion. First and foremost and MOST IMPORTANTLY, 1) EXFOLIATION....You MUST exfoliate before applying the product to remove dead skin. Dead skin is obviously a lot drier than the rest of your skin, so any creams or lotions applied to these areas will not be absorbed as well. The product will just 'sit' on these areas (i.e. knees, elbows, ankles, heels) and stain them darker.
2) MOISTURISING....You need to moisturise your whole body, paying particular attention to the dry skin areas, to enable the product to be absorbed more easily. 3) APPLICATION....The application of the St. Tropez lotion couldn't be any easier. (I advise wearing plastic gloves to ensure that there is no staining, especially if you have false nails. You don't want to look ravishing if you have 'brown stuff' staining the underside of your nails...you get my drift? lol)! Pour some of the lotion into your hands and, using upward strokes, gently rub it into your body. You can see where you have/haven't been because of the colour of the product. Use moisturiser around the hairline to blend the lotion in. When applying to the face/hands and feet, mix some moisturiser in with the product, so that it won't come out too dark. The product develops to a maximum strength, depending on your skin tone. It is impossible to put on too much lotion - just rub in and leave, but don't rub it in too hard, or you will take some of it off. If you wish your tan to be darker, re-apply after your shower/bath.
I recommend leaving it on overnight, but wear something dark in bed, as some of it may come off on the sheets. The lotion is very easily washed out of material though, as it uses a vegetable dye to produce the tan. Once you have your tan, maintenance is important. Moisturise every day and when you have a bath/shower, don't use too much soap and don't rub sponges/flannels etc over your body, as this will remove the tan. My St. Tropez tan usually lasts about 2 weeks on me, gradually fading.
Prices vary from store to store, but the St. Tropez Tinted Self-tanning Lotion that I bought from my local Hairdressing and Beauty Salon, cost me £25 for 240ml. (You can purchase the full kit, which includes the moisturiser, exfoliater self-tanning lotion and mitt - costs about £35 -45). I use a massage sponge or loofah to exfoliate and vaseline intensive care lotion to moisturise. The 240ml bottle should give me 8 full-body tans. A 6-minute session on the sunbed will cost me £2, dry up my skin and possibly give me skin cancer, plus I would need a LOT of sessions to give me the tan that St. Tropez does. I think I shall stay healthy, ta very much! So, Turkey, here I come - complete with tan!
P.S. It's the next day now, and I just had to tell you that I applied the lotion to my 13 year old daughter last night, and boy, does she look healthy!! She has always suffered from a lack of Iron, and so been very, very pale, but now I think she'll be using this all the time! Guess I had better send her out to work, so that she can afford it...lol!

Been thinking about this for some time but I too was dreading the 'streaked' look. You've reassured me now so I'll give it a go when I've got some spare cash. xxx
