St Tropez Self Tan Lotion has been around for quite a while now. Loved by top celebrities, the people that always seem to have an emaculate tan, with no streaks. Something that seems impossible to most of us, unless you choose to fry on the beach, or opt for the sunbeds, which in my opinion you would have to be mad to do, unless you want to look like a dried up old prune not so far down the line, and not to mention the risk of skin cancer. So what can you do? I'm sure 80% of us have tried to fake tan with disastrous results, enough to put you off for life....and some people make it look so easy!
I have read the opinions, the magazine articles, the celebrity endorsements, it was time to give
St Tropez a go. After all, it is meant to be 'foolproof'. I bought the 'Step 3, St Tropez Tinted Self-Tanning Lotion, 240ml off ebay for £19.99, although I then noticed it somewhere else for cheaper so my advice is to look around to get yourself the best deal. The fake tan comes in a thick, white plastic bottle, with a pump action nozzle to make things easier for you.
= To Apply =============This is the directions given on the back of the bottle.
"Step 3: Smooth St Tropez Auto-Bronzant evenly onto skin; let it absorb - do not over-rub. For best results apply at bedtime and shower next morning. May appear streaky as product dries - this is normal and showering in morning will uncover a beautiful, even tan. To deepen tan, apply 3 nights consecutively. For a lighter tan, blend to desired shade ONLY with St Tropez Body Moisturiser. To maintain your colour, apply 1 to 3 times weekly. To maintain your tan, moisturise daily and use St Tropez Body Polisher every 3 days."
I had a shower and exfoliated two hours before application. When I dried myself off I then moisturised my whole body and waited an hour before applying the self-tan. I used my own brand of moisturiser, and I know most other people do this, regardless of what it says on the bottle. When the hour was up, I applied the self-tan, I followed other peoples advice, and applied using rubber gloves, although some find it easier to do without them. The first thing I noticed when I pumped some of the fake tan out of the bottle onto my hands, was the colour, the self-tan was a dark brown colour, although I knew not to panic as after reading a few reviews on it, I knew what to expect, this is not an indication of the end result, as the colour apparently develops underneath this.
I carefully applied the lotion to my face, arms, chest, stomach and legs, being careful not to miss any spots, although this would be hard to do given the dark colour of the lotion. I smoothed it onto my skin, again, being careful not to rub too hard. I then carefully washed my hands, and avoided spashing any water on my wrists and arms that would cause streaks. After my full body and face was covered, there was nothing left to do but stand and wait for ten minuites on it drying in. Standing there like a female mud wrestler, and already having serious doubts, I noticed the smell. I know a lot of people have said it to be pleasant, but personally I did not like it, the smell is impossible to describe. When the ten minutes was up, I went to bed. Again, I took other peoples advice and slept naked, to avoid perspiring.
The next morning I got up and went straight to the shower.
=So, did I look like a bronzed goddess?========
Well, not exactly! After drying myself off I looked in the mirror. Yes, I was tanned alright, a dark, obvious fake tan, that looked ridiculous with my pale blonde hair! Perhaps I applied too much, or did something wrong......but you did say it was foolproof! Although the tan WAS streak free, so that's something I suppose!
Looking through the reviews again, in my blind panic, I read that the product should last between 3 days to a week!! Well, there was no way I was going to walk around like a blonde Diana Ross for that long, nothing left to do but try and scrub it off. So, if you are looking for long lasting Self-Tan, this is for you, a lot of scrubbing, and moisturising later, I still looked much the same. The next day however, after my morning shower the colour had faded significantly.
Conclusion=====
Almost all of the opinions I have read on this product have been positive, so don't necessarily let this put you off. This is just my own bad experience with the product, and I've decided pale and interesting is perhaps best after all.
Not recommended.
Thanks for reading.

Advantages: nice fragrance, relatively easy to apply. Disadvantages: turned out orange on my own skin, is not completely even and streak free, expensive, messy.
