I need a tan, and armed with this self knowledge, out comes the whipped mousse (again).
Having tried lots and lots of self tanning products, I have to admit that St. Tropez is my all time favourite; if anyone can let me know a better one, I'm open to suggestions! For now, though, it's this stuff, which I find is easier to apply than the St. Tropez creams.
The first thing to remember when applying St Tropez products is that you MUST exfoliate and moisturise or pay the price of potentially streaky body parts; if this is your thing, then go for the dry skinapplication. However, I don't think you have to buy all of the products,
and I certainly don't use the St Tropez exfoliator- any decent, much cheaper one does the job just as well.
Once you have exfoliated and moisturised then start to apply.
The product comes in a pump action tin so just press down and the darker than dark mousse comes out. Don't panic unless you have forgotten to put on your gloves, then you can really panic. If your gloves are on, then start with your legs and gently apply with a stroking motion, finishing at the ankles. If you are wearing sandals, then check it's not all over your toenails, and wipe any away with a cotton bud. Any bits that are missed are easily spotted because they are still white- just add a bit more.
This procedure can be repeated all the way to your neck. For your back, you can buy what looks like a do sell a mitt on a stick, but I prefer to get himself to do good by me, and strangely enough, he doesn't usually object (rarely wears the provided gloves either, which I fail to understand).
I think arms are the trickiest bit. How to get that perfect tan achieved on holiday with the inside of arms and palms of hands tan free. The best method to apply is to apply the mousse to the outside of your arms and then for the inside, mix it with a little moisturiser; this "dilutes" the colour, and means that the colours can be blended. For your hands, I firstly take off my gloves and then apply the product to the back of one hand, then rub the backs of my hands together, again, getting rid of excess with tissue.
It can be used on the face, which I tend to do along with the rest of me, although some people prefer their face to be lighter, in which case, again, mix the product with moistuiser.
I tend to do all this brown body preparation on a nice relaxed night when I get in from work and after application, climb straight into pyjamas...it is important to wear loose clothing and to avoid showering or bathing for 3 hours. If you can stand it (which I can't), just get in the shower the next morning. In fact, when I have had it applied professionally, they have forbidden me to wash till the next day.
Those seem like a lot of instructions for what is actually a really simple process when you get used to it.
So, what doe it cost for this miracle tan? I usually buy the 240ml which costs around £30, as opposed to the 120ml which costs around £24. I think that's much more economical!
Other useful bits and bobs to have are the body buff, which costs about £3.50 and gives your bronzed bits a great shine. St. Tropez sell disposable gloves for £2.50 but I find any cheap disposable gloves do the job. There is also a tanning applicator for £7.50 for those hard to reach places, but if you want to keep down the cost of your tan, and have someone to help, ask politely.
Does it work? Having waxed lyrical about the product, i have to say that yes, it does work. When you first start using it, you may have some teething/tanning problems, and get a few streaky bits, but once you get the hang of it, it really is simple. The one word of warning apart from remembering to wash your hands is never leave a dollop of the product on your body. As soon as you apply it, start to blend it in. If you leave a bit to come back to later, you will look as though you have a bruise, which won't look too good. Remember you don't have to make it horrendously expensive by buying all the products; I chopped and changed until I found the exfoliator and moisturiser which worked for me. The tan lasts on me about 4 days although I do body buff in between. If I want a darker tan, I tend to leave it until the next daya dn then go through the whole process all over again...beats cooking!
If you want an instant tan which will looks natural and dries in about one minute flat, then give it a go.
