My first experience of St Tropez tanning mousse was approximately 2 years ago when I worked alongside the beauty section within a department store. As part of the promotion within the sunglasses section we all created the summer look, including the use of the St Tropez tan to create that gorgeous beach babe look. Well all I can say is I was very pleasantly surprised.

My previous experience of Fake Tan using a pump spray from Garnier left me hideously orange, very much resembling an oompah-loompah from Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Needless to say I was very apprehensive about using fake tan after that point.

Prior to tan application, I had to go through all the usual rigour of exfoliation, moisturising and general skin preparation. It's worth noting here that if u plan to defuzz any areas of your body then it's worth doing at least 24 hours before tan application to avoid the tan going into your pores (especially if you are using waxing or epilation as your chosen method of hair removal). Otherwise if you apply tan straight after hair removal you can come out with a not very sexy speckled look which takes absolutely ages to get rid of as the tanning solution is ingrained deep into your pores. In addition to this don't tan straight after a shower as the same sort of thing can happen as the heat opens up your pores as well.

So once you've defuzzed, exfoliated, moisturised and in general prepared your skin (including make-up removal), then you are ready to tan. Again it's also worth noting here you shouldn't tan straight onto skin whereby you've just used make-up removing products as the chemicals can react together and produce a not so desirable result.

So set the scene ready for tanning ~ you're skin is all prepared and it would be worth putting down some old towels on nearby carpet, bedding etc depending on where you choose to tan, because once in carpet it is very difficult to get out! Also make sure if possible you get hold of some latex-style gloves or a fake tan mitt as this prevents the fake-tan-giveaway-sign of orange palms. When applying my tan I choose to use a latex style disposable glove underneath a flannel mitt ~ the flannel mitt ensures even spread and coverage of the tanning mousse, whilst the latex glove helps prevent any soak-through from going onto your palms.

You don't have to spend an absolute fortune buying additional application products ~ you can buy a box of industry latex gloves for about £3 from most hardware stores and a flannel mitt/bag from most pharmacies for less than £2 so save your pennies on all the advertised application products as the cheaper versions serve exactly the same purpose. Alternatively Boots do a self tan mitt for about £3.50 and St Tropez latex gloves 5 pairs for £2.50 so you can still get the same products if you don't have a hardware store near you.

So now onto the tanning itself. Ensure you have plenty of time and that you're not in a hurry when applying your tan. If you're planning to wear it for an event or night out then it's worth doing you're tanning at least the evening before, if not longer where possible, for reasons I will explain a bit later. Ensure you shake the mousse bottle well before application. If you do it correctly then it should start off as a liquid then froth up until you can barely hear anything being shaken in the bottle. One or 2 pumps of the mousse should suffice to cover a top or bottom leg area; you may need more or less depending on your skin type etc. Ensure when you are applying it that you wipe vertically rather than horizontally and pay special attention to areas such as underside of arms etc that do not have much tanning agent in naturally.

The best way I find to achieve a natural looking tan is to use the mousse on areas such as legs, bum, tum, back shoulders etc, and then use minimal amounts (i.e. just rub the mitt without applying mousse first) to areas such as face, neck, underside of arms, wrists and ankles, feet and top sides of hands. This is because there is sufficient enough of the mousse soaked into the mitt to ensure a lighter but natural product coverage.

Once you've tanned you're body, allow some drying time of approx 10-15 minutes before applying any clothing. Do not come into contact with water if you can avoid it!! Obviously you may need to wash your hands after but do this with great care. The reason for this is that the St Tropez mousse comes with a guide colour to ensure even application and that you don't miss any areas (unlike other products that are invisible or white during application so you can only hope for the best). I find the best time to do a tan is just before bed, but make sure you have some comfy towels on the bed to protect against the tan going into the bedding. It shouldn't do if you've left it time to dry but it's better to be safe than sorry. Also try not to have the heating on or engage in any activities that might make you sweat ;) as it will only cause the tan to come off.

When you get up in the morning or come to shower the fake tan off, just be aware that the guide colour will wash off and make the water look quite dirty and murky ~ don't worry this is normal!! Underneath the guide colour will reveal a beautiful natural looking tan that you can be proud of ~ so long as you have applied it correctly there will be no streaks and the best bit is YOU WILL NOT BE ORANGE!

Without getting too technical, having spoken to my friends in the know in the beauty department, the reason you won't go orange with St Tropez is because it has a green based tanning agent which ensures natural colour; hence the price reflects this. Some of the cheaper tanning products on the market use a red-orange based tanning agent, hence the colour you end up reflects this. Clinique's self tanning mousse is another very good green based tanning product like St. Tropez and is a fraction of the price at £13.50. It also has a gorgeous butterscotch smell during application and is fantastic for a winter based tan where it would look obvious to go too dark brown. I often use Clinique's as an intermediate tan as again it looks natural but is slightly lighter. The only thing I will say with fake tans is that natural body sweat can cause the colour to run, particularly in the earlier days of colour application, so be particularly wary if you plan on wearing anything white on a night out in a club etc ~ in these instances it is better to apply the tan several days before so it has time to wear into your skin and be in the skin rather on top (so perhaps tues or wed for a Friday or Saturday night out).

So hopefully from this, you will all be able to apply fake tan flawlessly and have a healthy sexy tan without the need to go out in the sun or use a sun bed. The only thing I will say to be prepared for is the slight tanning smell you have for a few days after. The best way to describe the smell with the St Tropez mousse is a bit like stale biscuits, although I've never had the smell with the Clinique tan so it could be linked with the intensity of tanning product in the St Tropez.

All that aside it is a very good product that is easy to apply, so happy tanning! :)

Excellent review! I'm really wary of tanning products, but this one sounds like it'd be good. I especially liked that you included tips from your experience and I'll be keeping those in mind if I ever try this!
