What are they? ……………….. Most people reading this will know what stacking rings are, but for those who do not they are rings of different sizes, and colours, with a hole in the middle, which allows them to be fitted in size order onto a vertical pole There are numerous different versions of this toy available but all have the same concept. When my son was 6 months old he was given a beautiful set made by Lamaze. The set consisted of 4 fabric rings each one a different vibrant colour. The base consisted of a soft fabric pole on a square base. The rings each had a hidden sound and were really tactile .At first he enjoyed chewing on the rings and waving them around to make the different sounds. Now he is able to fit them in correct size order onto the pole. This set is available from John Lewis and costs£12.99 I thought it would be helpful to review some of the sets available so have spent some time wondering around toy shops and asking friends for their opinions. My list is by no means exhaustive but hopefully will be useful for those of you looking to decide which set to buy.
1. For the very young I would recommend the soft fabric version of this toy. In addition to the Lamaze version I have reviewed above, Galt also make a lovely stacking chicken in bright colours it costs around £13 and is available from John Lewis, mail order express, alders and numerous other toy retailers. Soft fabric stacking rings are great for babies and young children as they are easy to hold, soft to chew and safe for little ones with little hand control as they don’t hurt when you accidentally hit yourself on the head!
2 .For those who like wooden toys there is plenty of choice. I liked the E.L.C version, which has 7, rings in different colours. There is a ball, which fits on top of the rings when they have been stacked correctly. This toy costs £8.00,good value I think.
3. D.K.L makes 2 wooden versions of this toy. One a giant set consisting of 8 rings costs £20.00And a smaller one which is a more affordable £9.00 also with 8 rings. I have only been able to examine the cheaper version, which appeared well made in brightly coloured hard wood. This toy is available from Mail order express and John Lewis.
4.Plan toys also make stacking rings in different coloured hardwood. This version is very similar to the one sold in E.L.C and has a ball, which fits onto the top. The plan version costs £10.99 and is again available in John Lewis
5.Stacking rings are also available in plastic .I bought a set of plastic stacking rings from a car boot sale about a year ago. These consist of 7 different coloured rings, which fit onto a plastic white vertical pole-not nearly as nice as the fabric or wooden versions but a good cheap alternative. I only paid 50p but the E.L.C sell basic plastic stacking rings for £6.00.
6.For his first birthday my son was given a set of fisher price stacking rings. These consist of a plastic pole with 4 star shaped rings each a different colour with added sparkle. On top is a round smiley yellow face. The base is rounded to allow it to rock. When the rings are put onto the pole lights flash, when the head is fitted a tune plays. There are several different tunes, which made it more interesting. The verdict …………….
My son loves his stacking rings .At first he enjoyed the texture of the fabric rings chewing them and learning how to shake them to make sounds. Later he was able to fit the rings onto the pole albeit in a haphazard order. Now he can fit the rings in the correct order and is beginning to learn his colours. The musical version is now a favourite toy and he gains great satisfaction from working out the correct order to fit the star shapes and loves to watch the lights flashing. My older son enjoys trying to throw the plastic rings over the pole!
I think stacking rings are a really good inexpensive toy. They help to teach hand eye co-ordination, colour recognition, decision-making and early mathematical concepts. We have also used this toy to count. But most importantly stacking rings are FUN!!! I would suggest that stacking rings are suitable for children from 9 months until 3 years old, although my 6 year old like to play with them too!
Advantages: Long lasting, many uses (no really - bear with me) Disadvantages: Rings can get lost under the sofa!
...am sure) who don't know stacking rings are in several parts. You have the base which has a pole sticking up from the bottom. The base of the one we have is curved so it rocks. The pole slopes and gets wider the lower down it goes. I don't know if they have changed it but the one we have has an unscrewable pole. Then you have plastic rings that go over the pole. The one we have got has 7 rings. They are all a different colour and size. The reason ... ...the top is because as I have said before the rings are different sizes. If you put them on in the right order then they will all fit properly. If you don't then they won't go down to meet the next ring.
What will it do for my child?
I have put child rather than baby because while it is really a baby toy I have used it pre-school children aswell. I will say how in a bit.
When baby is about 6 months old they will probably just want to chew on the ...

. I discovered the some stacking rings for 50pwhen I went into my local charity shop to give them some old jewellery.
Useful addition to the toy box at my house I thought. They were in good condition so I took them home soaked them in dettol to get rid of any germs. I don’t think Adrian is quite old enough to play with these yet but one day….

Stacking rings are good educational toys. Suitable for a baby of maybe 9 - 10 months upwards.
They assist in developing eye hand co-ordination and are brightly coloured to stimulate the visual senses. When you play with these with your child mention the colours to help with early colour recognition and the relative sizes.
The hoops are size graded the biggest one going onto the pole first, so they help the child think about ...

Advantages: Great toys, can get loads of variations, and make babies use hand eye co-ordination Disadvantages: Quite an old fashioned toy
Wow, my baby was bought 2 sets of these for Christmas, and he has never stopped playing with them.
I think these are brilliant toys, baby is having to think and use his hands, the toy is simple so he's not distracted by noises and lights, and he seems to find something different about them everytime he plays with them.
I have a plastic set (which is great in the bath !), and the lamaze fabric set, which are my favorites (and Dylans !) I even put ... ...with, he never get's tired of them. The Lamaze ones are 4 soft rings, in different textures, with a different noise, on a soft pole. They are also gently scented like sweets. They cost about £11.
I think that the rings are so great because they will last for so long, obviously a little baby won't be able to stack them and will just play and roll about with these, but I think as he get's older he's still going to enjoy this toy. The plasic set is ...

Advantages: Bright, colourful, learning Disadvantages: set outcome (difficult)
I love this toy in all its forms whether a cheap plastic one or a more plus electronic one with faces.
These are a great toy that can be stacked, used as teething rings, bracelets or used to discover rolling. They are bright and colourful and usually good value. They are easy to clean and can easily be played with in the bath or the sand tray.
The dissadvantage is that they have to be put together a certain way the largest first and so on, this ...

Advantages: durable Disadvantages: Not many available
Let me tell you about the fisher price rock ?a- stack. This toy is basically a pole on a base that your child stacksrings.
There are many similar stacking toys available from different toy makers we have one of these in the early year's dept of the special school I work in.
Fisher price has made this toy since 19 60 .I believe maybe slightly updated now but still the same basic toy. Fisher price must have sold 1000's of this toy as I have seen it in many homes and childcare centres.
Fisher price make good durable toys. The Fisher Price rock-a- stack is made out of a durable plastic. The Rock-a- stack toy is easy to wash to keep germ free.
The white base has a curved base that will enable baby rock the toy from side to side. This toy however will stand upright on its curved base; there is a small flat area. A white plastic ...
Advantages: soft, washable, easy to pick up Disadvantages: cats head falls off too easily
bottom legs on it, there are also some bells in there, which make a lovely tinkly sound.
The next ring is small, and orange, with little round circles on it.
The final section is the cats head with its front paws.
Obviously the rings are graduated, as the cat stacks, so the rings get smaller and it looks like a cat!
WHAT IS THE POINT OF IT?
Well according to Boots, the toy encourages baby's thinking skills and enhances baby's senses.
The rings are brightly coloured and have different textures and patterns on them.
Baby is encouraged to stack the rings and make the cat.
It is aimed at 6 months +
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF IT (WELL MY BABY'S)
Melissa likes to play with this cat. She is only 5 months and cannot sit up yet, so cannot stack it, but she likes to destroy it.
I place the cat fully made up beside her ...
Tomy Happy Stack.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yet another great toy by tomy.
What is the tomy happy stack.
Now im sure you all know what a toy stack is, however the tomy happy stack is slightly different from the one I used to play with. The one I used to have was a platform with a pole in the middle and you used to place the different size rings on top of each other.
However the tomy happy stack these days consists of a purple base, a blue and white ball with a happy face and 5 stackingrings that dont have holes in them, on the underside of the ring is a hollow ball shape hole and on the top is a ball, see my pictures if you dont understand what im talking about. The rings are all different colours, turquoise, green, yellow, orange and pink and all have ...
