Advantages Advantages Delicious, Quick and Easy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to Find out of Staffordshire

What did you have for breakfast this morning? Cereal, Toast, Fruit, Full English? Well I had North Staffordshire Oatcakes. You might never have heard of North Staffs Oatcakes but they are a local delicacy to me, and I can't get enough of them. Not to be confused with Scottish Oatcakes, Staffs oatcakes are more like pancakes, being flat and about eight inches across, and made from oatmeal, whole wheat flour, yeast, milk and water. Oatcakes have been around for centuries, and were documented by James Boswell as early as 1776, in his Journal 'Life of Johnson.' This is a biography of Dr Samuel ... more

Advantages Advantages Healthy and tasty alternative to bread, high in fibre. Easy and versatile to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages some difficulty in getting hold of them.

On a chill snowy evening there is nothing better than snuggling up in front of the fire with your family and a plate of oatcakes. Oatcakes are not to be confused with a hard Scottish biscuity type thing, or a Stoke City fanzine, but something that very closely resembles a pancake, in that they are flat, round and similarly coloured. The taste however is subtle but very very pleasing, and they lend themselves ... more

Every one that lives in Stoke and every one that has come to Staffordshire in the past has tried the North Staffordshire Oatcake. I personally don't like them and can't understand what people rave over them, I would much prefer a bacon butty than an oatcake as I purely don't like the taste of them. An oatcake is a kind of pancake that is made from oatmeal, flour and yeast and a as a rule is normally cooked on a griddle. As they are unique to Staffordshire, you normally find that fmailies don't actually cook these themselves however you can go in any supermarket, corner shop or sandwiches shop ... more

    Advantages Advantages delicious

Disadvantages Disadvantages how many you can eat, wow!

The oatcake is a delicacy mainly of the Potteries (North Staffordshire). I have eaten them ever since I was a little kid, playing kick the can, on our mining estate in Weston Coyney. People have tried several ways, to add to the Oatcake, for e.g.: syrup, honey, jams etc. but, Na john! There's only one way to enjoy yer oatcake, top it with cheese, melt it under the grill, add fried bacon and brown sauce, roll it up and munch away, now that's an oatcake ; ) The history of the oatcake goes as far back as 1776 as recorded by a James Boswell and Dr. Johnson, staying at the Three Crowns Inn at ... more
