Advantages: faster connection than rated, vista compatability Disadvantages: nothing that I could see!
the converters, and only for a few quid, but the said salesperson said that they would not work in my case, and offered me another cable, for £30, which was never going to fit, so I thought I\'d try a new parallelport instead.
I ordered this, and I was so impressed when it arrived. even for a no-hoper like me, helped by my less-hoper girlfriend, we slotted this into the back of the computer easily, and when it was installed, I didn\'t even need the drivers for my apparently vista-risky printer. All the functions work well, although the software was of course needed for the specialist functions. My mate who is better with all things PC than I came round, and apparently the port tests at 2Mbps - 33% faster than it is rated for.
All in all, a great card for those need a - or an extra - parallelport :) ...
Advantages: USB 1.1 Backwards Compatable Disadvantages: Instalation
I bought this card for 12 quid out of desperation. The desperation was that a lot of USB1.1 devices were not working on my PC and a lot were; I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had this problem.
Once I had installed the card and switched on the computer (running windows 2000) there were a few problems with installation of the drivers, the first being that the PDF files had language incompatibility problems. This is not a real problem though as there is word documents.
The second problem was that the drivers cannot be installed directly from the CD this caused severe frustration for me as no matter which directory I looked in the hardware wizard could not find the drivers. Like all good engineers I never read instruction manuals even if I had it, they did not tell you what you had to do to install the drivers ...
Advantages: Files in a physically small space. Disadvantages: None so far.
the blue screen of death appear so often that I gave up the ghost and had my hard drive formatted.
Whilst the shop were happy on the four occasions that this happened to move standard things like documents, they were not too keen on moving my programs, and time after time, I found myself storing things on CD's that inevitably got lost. Recently my computer crashed, and this time it was not due to any fault on my part but an overheating problem that fried the graphics card, although once again, I was put in the situation where I lost a lot of things that I consider important to me, because before the crash I did not have time to save items to disc.
It occurred to me that having an external drive would suit my needs in two ways. One would be that my files then became portable, and I could take them with me when I stay with friends in Paris ...
