Advantages: Pick up a bargain ? Disadvantages: Only 4 ethernet ports ?
...Another review from me for a discontinued item, but may be useful if you're loking to pick up a bargain item on ebay...
The D-Link DSL-504 ADSL Router has a built-in ADSL modem - plugs directly into your ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)-enabled phone line, and with its 4 port 10/100Mbps ethernet switch, allows connections to lots of things (check out my other reviews for what it's connected to...). The DCHP server allows automatic allocation of IP addresses to all your network gubbins too - although I've set the IP's for my wireless accesspoint & print server to allow easier access to their brower based interfaces.
The DSL-504 has a browser admin interface too for easy installation and setup, just type in the IP address (the default 192.168.0.1, as with most routers, but if it's changed you can always use the command line...

Advantages: Files in a physically small space. Disadvantages: None so far.
...and Toulouse who are as computer nutty as me, and the second reason being that I could store items that were important to me and if the computer crashed, could be sure that what I was losing was safely stored on the external drive, get the shop to repair the computer with peace of mind knowing that my files were safely tucked away on another hard drive.
WHAT YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY
The box contained the drive itself which is a pretty fancy looking drive in silver and black. Its a neat little box and no bigger than a clutch bag. ( 4.8 in x 8.3 in x 1.4 in).It also enclosed the power lead with its own transformer and a separate lead to plug in the USB point of your computer. There is also an installation CD which must be loaded prior to plugging the drive into a USB point.
STARTING UP
Starting to use the hard drive was strange. I wasn...

Advantages: Ebay bargain ! Disadvantages: Only 10 mbps, Only 4 ports
...Bought this on Ebay for a bargain £1 to expand my network. I've since replaced it with another 3Com hub (check out my other reviews), but thought I'd still let you know a little about it.
It's an entry-level, 4 port hub, but only 10BASE-T, rather than the faster 100BASE-TX - that's why I upgraded, so you can connect 4 users together.
There's one (manually switched) MDI-MDIX port to provide simple "in" connection from a server, switch, or hub, and three other female RJ-45 ports to send the network signal out to 3 other items.
The hub has an external power supply and a "CoolCurve" self-cooling design eliminating the need for a noisy fan. Its dimensions (height: 3.6cm, width: 23.1cm, depth: 13.6cm) allow it to fit nicely with other 3Com OfficeConnect units - special stacking clips are available.
It's an "unmanaged" hub, so...
