You remove the card from your camera if it has removable media and insert into the cardreader. You can buy USB or Parallel connecting raeders and for most opperating systems.
They show up on your computer as a new drive letter and the one i have is a Card Port Swift Syncro and is great. It has 2 slots one for PCMCIA and one for Smart Media. Comapact Flash is read in the PCMCIA slot with han adapter provided.
These readers download about 1MB a second so blisteringly fast. They will save you batteries and hair. You cardreader can also be used to clean and format your card to repair any errors that may be there....

The advantages of the Hama 9 in 1 system are various. Firstly, as it only takes up one USB slot and can be removed when not in use you don't have to worry about connection cables – it uses a standard USB connection, with the cable for connecting the cardreader supplied. Transfer rates are quicker using the cardreader than is often the case from digital cameras, and of course there is also no problem of batteries needing to be charged to access the cards in the camera.
As far as USB goes it is a USB 2.0 device, which is quicker than USB 1.1, but the device is backwardly compatible. Windows XP does tell you if you connect it to a USB 1.1 port that you could get higher speeds connecting to a USB 2.0 port if you have one. ...I bought this cardreader at that famous hit-tech computer store ;) Tesco. So I didn't expect that much especially at the price but it was going to be better than my ultra cheap no name cardreader it replaced.
I've been using this cardreader now for about 9 months. It cost £9.00 when I bought it so I didn't expect too much. But it surpassed my expectations and has beaten off my attempts to replace it with newer more modern units (usually ones advertising it will read 99 different card types and ones which are much much prettier).
