...in the power adapter provided, link up the USB cable - it is USB2 but will work, more slowly, with USB1.
Windows XP spots the drive as removable USB harddrive, and away you go.
I got into a wee bit of bother by not downloading the manual and reading it first - ( this is a male tech thing - we prefer to set things up without instructions whenever we can, and only refer to manuals when we have messed something up.!!) - *** I do deserve a pile of high ratings just for such an admission! ***
So what happened, was that I downloaded the SyncQuick software first, and it has a facility to lock access to all your other drives. This meant that when I needed to look at the CD's information in the DVD drive, I couldn't because it was locked by default.! So it took me a couple of hours to figure out why the DVD and CD drives would not operate. baaaaaaaaaaaah...

Advantages: Dual Layer - Fast Disadvantages: None so far
...This is my upgrade from a SCSI Yamaha 8424 cdrw and I must say i had a lot of problems at first!
Took me hours to figure out the problem - would burn cds ok but not dvds - if you have the older ide ribbon cables watch out for this gotcha - always use udma100 cables or upwards!
The drive can be flashed with the latest release of firmware and should be immediately as it opens up some extra funcitonality not installed when the drives were shipped!

The drives are available in black or beige - i went for black (just for a change) but this has no bearing on performance its just cosmetic!
In use the drive is extremely fast and compared to the dvd burners at work beats them all hands down in all modes including dual layer - Its a rather impressive drive although id prefer to have had an online light as well...

Using your own PC DV editing software you can capture the video at fast rates to your harddrive where you can make you own home movies.!
If you Dont have a firewire port then get StarTech's PCI Fire Wire card (Plug and Play installation) Look for it bundled with Ulead's great editing software.
