StarTech.com's DRW113SAT removable SATA hard drive drawer offers a cost-effective way to quickly insert or remove SATA hard drives from any PC with an available 5.25-inch drive bay without opening the computer case. It is an ideal solution for high-speed back-ups of critical files, moving large files from one computer to another, and for running multiple operating systems on the same PC. While providing security and minimizing downtime, the DRW113SAT features reliable shock absorbers and a sturdy aluminum construction that helps limit physical damage to the enclosed hard drive during transport. The absorbers take the bumps and jumps associated with moving the DRW113SAT from place to place and channels them away from the drive. This drive drawer is constructed of an aluminum caddy and plastic drive case making it suitable for everyday use. Included with the DRW113SAT is the exclusive Swap Manager software for Windows that allows you to hot-swap the removable drive without the need to power down the computer. This lets you add or remove drives with minimal disruption to your workflow.

I bought my Pioneer DVR-212D, a few days ago for just £11 inc. VAT, BRAND NEW, from eBuyer.com. I hope you agree that's an incredible price for a S-ATA DVD rewriter.
I only really needed the Pioneer drive to aid in testing the functionality of another more current P-ATA DVD-RW drive that was exhibiting some very odd behaviour that I wasn't absolutely certain was the drive's fault, so I wasn't too fussy about it being highly specified. Having said that the pioneer handles all manner of read/write formats with the exception of writing to DVD-RAM and writing Lightscribe data. Obviously...

...motherboard is only ATA-66. The drive was also very quiet – it is claimed to be one of the quietest drives on the market, I certainly noticed the difference in comparison with the Maxtor drive I was using (and that was only just over a year old...)
Another innovation is SeaShield board protection which protects the PCB on the underside of the board, which the manufacturers claim is useful in helping to reduce the number of failures due to electrostatic discharge. The plastic “SeaShell” construction helps to keep this hard drive quiet, as well as offering extra shockabsorbency, and the drive is practically silent (the manufactures claim about 2-3 bels noise emission), a lot better than the constantly ticking Maxtor that I had before.
