I had played Warcraft 2 for some time and eagerly looked forward to the release of this game when plans for it were originally announced - I have to admit being a fan of this genre.
That aside, I have had the game ever since it has been released and now, nearly 2 years on, still play it occasionally - now that shows the longevity of the game.
OK, to basics. Basically the plot line is that an alien race (that funnily enough seem to look like Aliens from the film of the same name!) have been taking over planets and you either have to wipe them out - or help them take over the universe depending on what side you pick.
Now you can be Humans, Zerg (the aliens) or Protoss (a kind of space elf with high levels of technology) in the main 'campaigns' or play individual scenarios. The game recommends that you start with the humans, work through the zerg and then onto the protoss as this follows the unfolding scenario of the game. However you can choose your race if you want to do it differently.
Like most good games, it starts you off with basic units and gradually works you through a wide range of new units whilst you work through and complete the missions.
In a nice twist, a couple of the missions, you play seek and destroy in a building complex with nothing but a few infantry and a hell of a lot of aliens - however, if it is major battles you are after, you can have them too!
Ok, by request, I have editing in this section! The first few levels in each of the campaigns are easy, however, they get progressively harder until the final levels in each campaign are nigh on impossible to complete in one sitting (expect these last levels to last about 8-10 hours each).
Due to the gory nature and violence in the game, I understand that it carries a 15+ rating - so no young teenies!
Once you have completed the game (which can take some time as some of the levels are rather long!) you can play around with the mission editor and even download extra scenarios from the internet. (not forgetting to mention that there is now an expansion module with even more units and further scenarios/campaigns)
Overall a very playable game with some excellent in between level cinematics - and a rather breathtaking final cinematic/short film!
Go buy it!

Hello. This is a good little opinion. If you mention the price of this game, and some detail about the graphics, I would have rated this higher. Take care, Georgina.

Weird but I don't remember this being gory! My 11yr old son has played this loads of times and loves it. Sue

Review of StarCraft (PC)
Advantages: New units, campaigns, levels and a fluid plot. Did not tip the balance of units but some cool idea Disadvantages: Requires full working version of Starcraft.
Advantages: New units, maps, campaigns, music and storyline Disadvantages: Doesn't add anything for people who didn't enjoy Starcraft, lots of maps are already available to freely download off the internet (although not always of such a high standard)
