//GAME BACKGROUND\\
Your character is the former first officer of the USS Dauntless, a Galaxy class starship assigned to patrol an area of space known as the Maelstrom. One fateful day, during a trip to one of the colonies in the Vesuvi system inside the Maelstrom, the star explodes, destroying the colony, and killing the Captain, who was heading down to the planet in a shuttlecraft.
Due to this unforseen turn of events, you have been placed in command of the Dauntless, and have been assigned a new first officer, Commander Saffi Larsen (played by Hackett). After recieving repairs and replacement crew, the Dauntless is given her first mission under your command, which is assisting the remaining Vesuvi colonies with supplies and personnel. This is where you take over.
//PACKAGING\\
Bridge Commander, like most modern games, uses the now almost standard DVD packaging for PC games. However, unlike a lot of DVD boxed games, this one comes with a 90-page Captain's Manual, filled with gameplay tips, command lists, and backstory to the Bridge Commander game. There is also a secondary copy of the manual on the game CD in PDF format, in case you lose your paper one..and if you lose the disc..well there's no point in reading the manual, is there? :)
//GRAPHICS\\
The graphics in Bridge Commander are quite simply, stunning. The ship models are accurate if not better than the models seen on the TV show, and are all fully deformable with the correct options enabled, meaning that you can blow various pieces of the ships' hulls up during battle, such as breaking off the warp engines, or destroying the bridge, or even placing some nice torpedo sized holes in the nice little saucers of the Federation ships.
There are various graphical options, meaning that whether you have an old Voodoo 3, or a top of the range Geforce 4 graphics card, there'll be some setting to cater for you. Of course, those with higher end graphics cards will get the cooler features such as the higher resolutions and enhanced glows, etc, but the graphics look stunning even on the lowest setting.
//SOUND\\
The sound in this game serves it's purpose, with all sound effects sounding authentic to the Star Trek series. Also, the appearance of real Star Trek actors to provide voices for the game adds to the interest.
//GAMEPLAY\\
The gameplay in Bridge Commander is hard to fault. most functions are available through both a graphical user interface (in the style of the Next Generation-era LCARS computer interface) and via mouse and keyboard shortcuts. There are also menus for each of the officers on the Bridge, and they can be accessed by clicking on the correct officer for each department.
However, here is where one of the bad points crops up. While the officers are generally competent, using the Tactical Officer during a combat situation can make battles more lengthy than they need to be, since he just seems to fire from anywhere and not aim for certain locations
Never fear though, for you are able to control the ship AND fire the weapons manually..allowing you to personally target vulnerable points on the enemy's hull, allowing you to cause some of the really severe damage such as breaking parts off. Also, control is a lot easier in manual settings, allowing you to respond to changes quickly.
Many people have said that by calling itself Bridge Commander, it pretends to be something it's not. I feel that this is partly true, because due to the inadequate AI of the Tactical and Helm officers during combat, you're often left to do it yourself. Also, the Engineering settings have be altered by you on the fly during combats, so you have to boost power to the weapons and shields past the 100% mark yourself if you want to shorten waiting times, and boost defences.
The single player game takes the form of a campaign, with all of the missions following on from each other and sometimes interspersed with actual in-game engine cutscenes, which are often far better than FMV or pre-rendered scenes, as they keep you immersed in the game.
There is also a "Quick Battle" skirmish mode, which allows you to make your own combat situations to either hone your skills or just have some fun.
Multiplayer however, has several modes, such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Defend the Starbase. From personal experience. I can tell you that all of these are great fun, and there are several modifications popping up all over the net to make the multiplayer game even better than it is now, such as new ships being made, and new maps, thanks to the official development kit put out by Activision.
//=FINAL VERDICT=\\
Star Trek : Bridge Commander is a great game, if a little mis-titled. But if you like great space combat sims, or love Star Trek, or even both, then I can definitely recommend this game to you.
Advantages: Realistic Gameplay Disadvantages: Sounds Overlap In Places
Star Trek Bridge Commander is one of the first games I have ever had the privilege to play on PC. As a Star Trek fan it is only normal for excitement to appear when a new star trek game is realised but this game in my view out ranks all others. It is the sort of game that never gets old with all sorts of great aspects to it.
Star Trek Bridge Commander gives you the opportunity to fully interact with your crew of bridge officers that take charge ... ...will meet famous characters of star trek on your journey such as Captain Picard and Commander data that will help you to complete your missions throughout the game. Admiral Lou will also become a big feature throughout the game and will show you new assignments and reward and punish you for your efforts.
Once engages in battle your ship will receive structural damage and in bridge mode the ship will rock and bang when hit with torpedoes. You have ...

Advantages: full control of the game Disadvantages: install takes a long time
after watching many episodes of star trek i saw an advert fro bridge commander, i always wanted to be on the bridge of a starship giving out the orders and thought that this was probably as real as it was going to get for the time being so i went out and bought the game.
after at least 1 hour installing on an AMD athlon xp 1800+ 256mb ram 64mb graphics (for the non computer savvy, much faster than the game requires), i decided that i would be careful ... ...listen to that infernal background music any more.
after starting my first mission i was suprised to see how detailed the graphics were and how well the ship responded to commands, i was also suprised at the fact that although the controls would keep any trekkie happy that they look straight from the show, they were amazingly intuitive and easy to grasp.
after completing the game in 3 days playing for at least 6 hours per day on easy mode (thats ...

Advantages: Finally you actually get to fly the enterprise Disadvantages: needs a high spec system to run it
Star Trek Bridge Commander is original as in most star trek spin off games you can only sit out in space or above the ground and watch the action as you exert some control over the ongoing battle or whatever the game is about Bridge commander is different in so much as you get to sit in the captains chair yea I said it the dream of many a trekkie and Star Trek actor alike.
Whilst you go through the game you can go round the bridge and interact with ... ...episode each character having different purpose and abilities for you to learn and use, each persons participation can be left automatic or can be controlled directly by the player.
the story unfolds as you are the second officer on a ship in the vesuvi system where a survey is taking place as to why the local conditions are preventing colonisation of a planet. When your captain goes down to the planet on a mission the systems sun explodes and destroys ...

Advantages: A very enjoyable game Disadvantages: some missions become frustrating
Star Trek Bridge Commander is one of the few star trek games where you can either control your starship from the bridge or from third person view of the starship. To sum this up in several words, this means you get to command the bridge of a starship where you can do what ever you want.
The story of this game is a more complex story than previous games. It invovles the romulans, klingons, cardassions and a new race but i will not say who they are ... ...the mystery of how a star exploded which destroyed a federation colony, damaged a starship and killed a captain. As you continue through the game, the missions become more difficult, more complex and harder. You eventually gain control of USS Sovereign, the first of the Sovereign class, in chapter 3 of the story. And eventually you find the culprits who destroyed the star and you must then fight a war which will put you at the front lines. But you ...

Advantages: Story line, Graphics, Design, Creativity Disadvantages: None
...sat at home watching a Star Tek episode and thought to your self "I wonder what it would be like if I control the Enterpise?", well now you can. with Stare Trek Bridge Commander. With a game that offers a fantastic story line including characters from the series allowing for hours of fun. Bridge Commander is one of the only Star Trek games that allows the player to decide where they want to control the ship from whether it is inside or out in space ... ...would recommend this game to star trek fans without a doubt however anyone that likes 3D space simulations will love this too. The story line also will interest most players even if they aren't star trek fans because the story lines really is excellent.

Immerse yourself once again in the world of Star Trek with Star Trek Bridge Commander from Activision. While some of the Star Trek titles have really only appealed to a select few--i.e., die-hard Star Trek fans--this title brings a different slant on the world of tactical combat simulations. Based around a first-person view, you are either the first officer, Captain or Admiral aboard a Galaxy-class ship called the Dauntless. But just because it is first-person doesn't mean that you will be gun's-a-blazing and running from deck to deck like Star Trek Voyager; as the title suggests you will have your bum firmly planted in the chair as you command others, in your spaceship's moment of need. Based across 25 in-depth levels, you are slowly thrown into the melee, learning the systems--with the help of Jean Luc Picard--as you ferry him to another spaceport. Boredom or a quick completion are unlikely. The game also boasts a quick-battle arena where you can set a number of parameters and fight up to 16 other computer or human controlled craft across a LAN or the Internet. If you've ever fancied taking control of the Enterprise, but up until now were afraid of all the tactical RTS-style games such as Star Trek Armada 2, this is a perfect opportunity to earn your wings.--Jason Denwood
