Star Wars is back (part 1)
Review of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire - Timothy Zahn by
oblivion
Advantages: First ever 'new' Star Wars Book
Disadvantages: May only apeal to Sci Fi fans
...In 1991 Star Wars returned with a vengeance. Timothy Zahn, brought back the great characters of George Lucas' Star Wars Trilogy. The book brings the New Republic now fromed on the former Imperial world of Coruscant, back against a new Imperial leader, Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn, a tactical genius has found Jedi clone Joruus C'boath. Using the Emporer's cloning chamber Thrawn is trying to take control of Coruscant and wipe out the republic. The first chapter also brings a new nuetral into the fray. The smuggler's alliance have accepted the Republic control and work for the Republic for money. The book was the first of many Star Wars novels by Zahn and is a classic. At only £5 it's a great buy for all Sci Fi readers and Star Wars fans alike. I have read many Star Wars and Sci Fi books and this one sticks out among all of them....

An official Star Wars novel
Review of Star Wars: The Cestus Deception - Steven Barnes by
Mel27
Advantages: Cheap to buy. Drawing of Ewan McGregor on the front!
Disadvantages: Difficult to read in places, needs prior "Star Wars" knowledge
...what the Jedi stand for. There are also aliens called the X-Ting, which have the ability to change their sex. This is an interesting idea.
I personally found this book difficult going, not least because of all the space jargon. I couldn't keep up! But Steven Barnes's writing (he has also written episodes of "The Twilight Zone" and "Baywatch" amongst other things, according to StarWars.com) helps you imagine what the places look like. Barnes's descriptive skill is the best thing about this book. He writes, for instance, about how the morning sun "glittered like a sliver of slivered ice", feeding the reader's imagination. However, I still found it very tricky to follow the different factions.
The novel has pictures of Obi-Wan Kenobi (in the Ewan McGregor stage) and Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus (aka Christopher Lee) on the front...

What does it take to win a war?
Review of A War to be Won: Fighting the Second World War - Williamson Murray, Allan R. Millett by
frkurt
Advantages: Interesting, engaging, generally good analysis
Disadvantages: A little more detail in some places would be welcome
...) political and economic considerations behind the military decisions. Murray and Millett are very direct in this focus:
----------------------------------------------------------------
In this book, we have concentrated on the conduct of operations by the military organizations that waged the war. We have not ignored the strategic and political decisions that drove the war, but what interests us most are the issues of military effectiveness.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps more true than anywhere else, on the battlefield those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it, and, in fact, are most likely doomed to failure because the enemy most likely has consulted history.
This book looks at the origins of the war (chapter 1 and chapter 7), follows the military progress through the European...
