Starbucks is a global coffee house chain; in fact it's the biggest coffee house company in the world. It was founded in 1971 in Seattle, Washington, and now has over 15,000 stores in 44 countries. It enjoyed a huge expansion in the 1990's which included its first chain outside North America (Tokyo in 1996) and the first UK Starbucks in 1998.
As well as coffee, Starbucks sell a wide variety of beverages including Hot Chocolate, Fruit Smoothies and bottled water. They also sell snacks such as muffins, caramel shortbread as well as healthier alternatives such as yogurt and 'skinny' muffins. To me, the prices overall are a little expensive, but I pay them because no-one makes coffee like they do! I know a lot of people don't like it and they think the coffee is too sickly etc, but I do like the sweetness. I don't like black coffee so having different flavours in my cup is an appealing choice, and maybe I've just got a sweet tooth but I've never found any of their products to be too sweet.
I've always enjoyed the atmosphere of the stores as well. When you go in there are a mixture of browns and greens, giving a very cozy, autumn feel. The décor is smart and modern and feels rather American, although seeing as it started there that's understandable. A relatively new and enjoyable approach to seating are the comfy chairs. These are the kind of chairs you have in your home, they're very plush and comfortable, perfect for lying in with a hot drink in winter!
The music they play is a mixture of easy listening and Jazz, or easy listening Jazz. It's very relaxing, and just the thing you need to settle down with. I'm glad they play something different than the usual current pop hits, as I would get bored of that quite quickly. It does feel somewhat homely, which I think is what Starbucks are trying to go for, like a home away from home sort of thing, where you can come and enjoy a beverage and do some work on your laptop or catch up with some friends. The staff seem well mannered, of course everyone gets stressed sometimes but I've never been served by a rude or disrespectful employee.
Overall a fantastic place to go, with scrumptious food and drink. When I go to the centre of Bristol I always make sure to pop into Starbucks, five stars!
