Ok, so it's not science fact at all really, but some of the core ideas are based on historical characters from Eygptian Theology - the gods!
The simple idea is that many years ago a race of space aliens came to earth through a large stone circle - the star gate - and set themselves up as gods here on earth. Using their advanced technology they used humans as slaves and 'seeded' other planets with them throughout the galaxy to build their own power bases and fight amongst themselves (mostly).
5,000 years later (50 years ago) archeologists find the Star Gate while excavating in the Sahara Desert and it's transported to a mountain complex in the Northern united states (it's a little unclear exactly where Star Gate Command is based) and a project is set up to try and a) figure out what it is and b) to get it working again.
Now we're at the present day and the Star Gate is working. Star Gate Command is run primarily by the US Air Force and under the command of General Hammond various teams trawl the galaxy looking for either useful resources that earth could utilise or make contact with friendly races from other planets.
Enter the Ga'Ould, the original alien race that enslaved humans they don't like the fact that we're trotting round their territory upsetting the status quo and take steps to try and stop us. The senior team of Star Gate explorers SG1 led by Colonel Jack O'Neil are usually very lucky in managing to beat the Ga'Ould and have even co-opted one of their Jafar to our side.
This Jafar - Te'alk gices us the run down on the Ga'Ould and off we go, trying every way we can to beat them or gain friends and technology to defend planet Earth from the Ga'ould.
Ok, I hope you're all still with me here - things have gone on from there a little in the series that have already been on and we have a tentative treaty with the Ga'Ould now - they will leave us alone as long as we stay off their patch. There are still the odd skirmish with them though and we have upset quite a few of their plans for Galatic domination over the last couple of years and we have gained a few allies in the fight.
The most recent series has just begun on Sky 1 and Daniel Jackson has returned to the SG1 team after an absence of a year (for personal reasons) and the story continues. Mostly now it's about contact with other humans - remember the seeding of the planets the Ga'Ould did a few thousand years ago - well it seems that most planets in the galaxy have human inhabitants now but most are behind us technologically speaking but now and then a surprise springs up and a non-human race is found.
All in all the series is well written and not having seen any of the previous series would not detract from starting now. There is enough background over a few weeks to get the idea very quickly and I have no doubt that it will continue to run for several more years at least. The programme is on it's 5th writer now but it's hard to tell the difference it's so well put together and the fact that the main characters are all still there has without doubt helped.
This is nothing like Star Trek and not all trekkies will automatically like this programme, but if you like your science fiction with a little twisting of real facts then you'll find this interesting to say the least.
Currently the 3rd series is being re-run on Sky 1 at 6pm each evening with the latest from the new series on Mondays at 8pm. It will soon be on BBC2 probably so those of you without sattelite or cable keep your eyes on the TV guide....lol
Some of the americanisms will amuse you if like me you're a brit but they don't really get in the way of the programme - it seems to have been written with an international auidience in mind - I can't think why...;)
Not a programme for everyone but if you watch it once you will probably want to watch it again.... I'm only going to give the prog a 4 star rating cos you need to want to watch it to get into it but apart from that well worth every one of the stars!
Advantages: excellent movie spin-off, good scripts, great special effects for a TV series Disadvantages: sometimes the threads even lose me
The TV Series STARGATE SG1 was based on the film of the same name (less the ‘SG1’) where an ancient Egyptian artefact is found. Unconventional Egyptologist, Daniel Jackson, manages to decipher it and it becomes an active 'stargate' - i.e a way to travel to stars by the forming of a wormhole through space. Simple enough for you?
The film was a huge success, mixing overtones of ‘Indiana Jones’ with a top Sci-Fi yarn. Dircted ... ...and space through the various stargate portals.
The theory is simple, a gate is placed on different planets, this needs to have six points of reference to identify it as it is in three dimensional space, by dialling that unique address in and telling the gate where you are starting off from it opens a temporary route to another world. The series is very interesting and imaginative, with each week following on from the last, but with a new story, ...

Advantages: Not just a cheap copy of the film! Disadvantages: American! (even though the cast and crew are predominantly Canadian).
So begins Stargate-SG1. The series explores the adventures that Col. Jack O’Neill and his team have following the first off world excursion. It also deals with some of the complexities of the characters which the film did not have time for. It introduces new characters not in the film that are more important to balance the series. The most striking of which is Teal’c. He is a Jaffa (pronounced Jafar), aliens who serve the Goa’uld as their foot soldiers. ... ...Jaffa races are approximately human, a little larger and have an ‘X’ shaped pouch on the stomach. Into the pouch an immature Goa’uld lava is placed. The idea is that the Jaffa will incubate the lava until it is ready to take a human host, about seven years later. The Jaffa receives perfect health whilst he has the parasite. Jaffa are easily spotted as they carry a tattoo or symbol on their forehead showing them to be Goa’uld hosts. Teal’c offers ...

Advantages: Great Story and Characters Disadvantages: None
Stargate SG-1, I love this series. Here is what it’s all about.
OVERVIEW
Stargate SG-1 is a Canadian TV Series that became a spin off from the 1994 Movie ‘Stargate’. The concept of the show was kept the same as the film, but the cast were completely different except for one ‘Skaara’ played by Alexis Cruz. Stargate SG-1 is based on Earth, in Canada, in an area named Cheyenne Mountain. The Stargate is a big round device that once activated creates ... ...Stargates in the Universe. Each Stargate has these symbols that are called Glyphs around it, and these represent different addresses. A device called the Dial Home Device also has all the Glyphs on it, and this device is used to dial another Stargate. Each address has 7 glyphs in it, and once an address has been dialled, the Stargate will connect and this huge pool of blue shimmering liquid type stuff shoots out from the Stargate (which will vaporise ...

...know or have heard of Stargate SG1 somewhere along the line as people have with Star Trek but I will go over this show for the people that either are unfamiliar or have not heard of it at all. It is located in Canada in the mountains, which is hard to find. The SGC deals with a ... ...moral concepts and keeping the Stargate project hidden from the civilian world.
In my view this program is in the same league as Star Trek and I feel that over time it will become more and more popular just as the film leading to the series did. The only bad thing I can really say about the series is that fact that there are a lot of American Government issues that don’t really aply to me as I am British and sometimes I feel I am being taught about ...

...on the story of the stargate in a series format. I think the new cast is actually an improvement and the script is written brilliantly. The Characters all have there own unique personality's that show constantly throughout each episode. Its not only a sci-fi but it has its funny side aswell. Jack with his sarcastic comment and Teal'c not used to language on earth allways uses complex words when smaller ones could of been used. As far as the Sci-fi ... ...in space thing with all the Star treks. Its nice to see a different style of Sci-fi series on the tv. The 4th series is currently showing in the USA, and over here sky is upto the end of series 3. Series 2 is out on DVD and video. So if you likeed the film I think you will love the series. As far as story line goes then this sci-fi (apart from the worm hole) has quite beleivable storylines, Alien races with different technologies could allways be ...

Advantages: Great entertainment Disadvantages: Robert Carlyle is quite weak
MGM are certainly getting their money's worth out of the Stargate franchise, with 3 Stargate movies, SG1 and Atlantis, an Atlantis movie in production, Stargate Infinity, talks on a new SG1 project (possible 4th movie) and now Stargate Universe.
What's this one about
In a nutshell Stargate Universe follows the lives of a rag tag team who, because of an attack from the Lucian Alliance, have ended up on an ancient ship (The Destiny) which is travelling across the universe on a preset course.
The unmanned ship set off thousands of years earlier, so the life support system and other systems are past their best. Luckily the ship has been pre programmed to stop at selected stargates on route, so the team have 12 hours at each stop to find the supplies they need and no doubt encounter all manner of aliens.

Advantages: A whole new help of the Stargate fest Disadvantages: A bit samey samey
For those of you who are fans of the StargateSG1 show, and I know there are plenty of you, MGM have provided a new serving and a new slant on the original Stargate Series which is currently on its 8th season.
It comes in the shape of Stargate Atlantis which introduces new characters and new adventures. This is not to be confused with StargateSG1 which will also be starting here in the UK very soon. The idea is that season 8 of StargateSG1 and Stargate Atlantis will run in tandem.
Whereas StargateSG-1 centres around the Stargate, Atlantis aims to take viewers on a brand new adventure and it succeeds. It doesn?t try to be SG-1, although you can see similarities in the characters.
To give you a brief overview of the plot, a secret base left by the originators of the Stargate is discovered here on Earth, buried among the ruins ...
Advantages: Wide spectrum of entertainment Disadvantages: Too many advertisements
Since its creation in the summer of 1982, Sky One has exceeded all public expectations, bringing some of the most creative and popular TV programs to the UK.
I first got Sky in 2000 and after seeing all the advertisements for Sky One, I soon upgraded my package. One of the most attractive features of Sky One is that it's the new-found home for all the most popular TV shows in existence. It plays host to many science fiction, comedy and sit-com shows, including:
- Star Trek (And All Spin-Offs)
- The X-Files
- StargateSG-1
- Stargate Atlantis
- 24
- Nip/Tuc
- Las Vegas
- Battlestar Galactica
- Rescue Me
- Eureka
- Brainiac Science & History Abuse
- The 4400
- Road Wars
- Dream Team
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- The Simpsons
- WWE Smackdown/Raw etc.
- Lost
With all these great shows, it's easy to see why Sky One ...
