Let me start by saying that if graphic violence is not your thing then State of Emergency is not for you, it’s very graphic and very indiscriminate style of violence (for example throwing a hand grenade into a busy shopping mall) has upset quite a lot of people, with some states in America actually trying to ban the game, leading to it bearing at least 3 ‘Over 18s’ stickers when I bought my copy.
The game is set, like so many others, in a dark corrupted future 2035, to be precise, run by the shadowy Corporation. You play one of 5 stereo typical characters, the bitter ex-cop, the token female in a short skirt, the muscle bound black man, the gold chain wearin’ gangsta’ and finally the skinny white guy who knows a bit about computers (all of which must have taken the developers at least 30 seconds to come up with). There are 5 different areas in which you can play within The Mall, Chinatown, The East Side and Corporation Central all of these are fairly large and well laid out and have nice touches throughout.
There are two main types of game play, the loosely storyline driven Revolution mode and the Kill Fest that is Kaos (their spelling not mine) Mode. Revolution mode consists of you being given various tasks to do, invariably involving big guns explosions and lots and lots of fisticuffs, whilst Kaos mode is a timed ‘get to a certain score before the clock runs out’ affair and certainly lives up to its name.
Once you actually start a game the first thing that strikes you (apart from the odd petrol bomb) is the games cartoon-y visual style, this is obviously a concession on behalf of the developers because if it looked too realistic then due to the subject matter it would never have been released. The second thing that amazes you is the sheer number of characters on the screen at any one time, and their reactions to the environment around them (pull out a rocket launcher and watch them panic, cower or just plain run for it) it really is something to see. The game starts with your character being unarmed but still very handy with the old hands and feet, failing that you could always pick up any large piece of street furniture and hit someone with that. Guns, Grenades, Baseball bats etc can be found all over the place so you wont stay vulnerable for long.
The graphics whilst being cartoon-y are still great quality and smooth and don’t suffer from any noticeable slow down. The soundtrack and in-game FX are also of a high quality.
While State of Emergency is undoubtedly a good game it is not a great game, the box bears the Rock star logo (the people solely responsible for the fantastic GTA 3) State of Emergency was developed by a completely different company entirely (VIS), and it shows. Where Grand Theft Auto was varied and ground breaking State of emergency soon becomes repetitive (but manages never to become boring) and is fairly un-original in its storylines and characters, but is saved in part by the sheer pandemonium going on throughout. Playing the game is great for stress release and gives you a feeling of ‘I shouldn’t really like running around a shopping mall with a semi automatic weapon…but I do’. That said it does give me a slightly uneasy feel at the same time. In a time when in real life a madman running amok with a guns is becoming more and more common (at the time of writing a French man shot and killed 8 people in Paris last night) this game is setting it self up for controversy. The whole violence / video games influencing children argument will no doubt be wheeled out again, but if you take it for what it is (a game) and treat it a such you should be able to play it without a guilty conscience. Basically I like it but I know deep down that I shouldn’t.
Any way, to sum up... Not as good as GTA 3, don’t be fooled by the rock star logo. But worth a look if only for the amount of stuff going on onscreen at any one time. I don’t however think that in 6 months time you will still be playing it due to it only having 5 different areas, that said after a few pints on a Friday night you and your mates may well put this on and go on a ‘virtual’ rampage.
Advantages: Good fun, Free roaming game, Nice sound Disadvantages: Can be very hard, Could get 'samey'
...hear you ask. Well, State of Emergency is set in the far future, where corporations have replaced politics and freedom with advertising and control over the media. All news is good news and the people who work hard and do what they are told are treated with money and a home. There are those that prefer their freedom, however, and refuse to bow down to their corporate masters. You play one such character, choosing from either an ex-police man or a ... ...you occupied, plus the Chaos mode, which you can easily pick up and play.
Definitely not a game for children, but certainly a great way to unwind after a day at the office, State of Emergency will keep any fan of the old school 2D games happy for ages. ...

...the streets in protest,
A state of emergency has been declared,
Now its time to fight for freedom.
Sounds like a great start for a game, and you are so right. With a wafer thin plot that could fit down the gap between the steel doors of Tony Blair’s wallet, State of Emergency promises little but brings so much fun it’s hard to believe what you are doing. See this isn’t just your usual action game, there’s a lot more to it than that. Developed ... ...Auto 3” this game really is something special. A fully deserved top overall game award at this years E3 games show (the biggest games event of the year outside Japan) glistens on top of this brilliantly original game which brings aggression and addictiveness right to the surface and yet still leaves you some room for thought and not just pure emotion. You play the part of an innocent civilian caught in the middle of a riot in a mall brought around ...

Advantages: Cool slick graphics and great gameplay Disadvantages: Can become very repetitive
To begin with I have to make this clear, this game is of an extremely violent nature and those easily shocked or offended should steer well clear of this game. It is not meant for children and is made up of highly mature content.
As is common amongst many games now on the market it is set in the future. A dark terrible future where YOUR country is run by a huge corporation and YOU and the other citizens are an oppressed mass urging to break free ... ...Freedom and you can play as 1 of 5 predictable characters: 1. a good cop gone bad
2. a tacky female in a mini skirt
3. a huge overweight Mexican gangster
4. a computer nerd
5. a muscle bond grotesque black man
There are 4 huge areas in which you get to play, The Mall, Chinatown, East Side and Corporation Central. You start of on the Mall area in the middle of a riot caused by your group. Hundreds of characters fill the screen causing chaos looting ...

...be bought.
For me, State of Emergency was like buying an item of clothing from a catalogue; it looked so nice in the picture, the model was very goodlooking and it seemed the best thing in the world, but when you get it home and try it on, it is bland and uninteresting.
The idea of the game is that an oppressive government is in power and you are attempting to overthrow them. This storyline could be taken so far, but all you get is a large site ... ...area a myriad of guys dressed in black. They work the this government and enjoy beating people to a pulp.
There are three ways to get bored of this game. The first is to do missions. It's the most interesting by far, you get to escort people from A to B, protecting them from the black-clad gentlemen, smash something up, assassinate someone or steal something and make a mad dash to return it to your gang leader. The action involves punching, kicking ...
