Iím a big fan of Stephen Fry; if Iím honest I would happily listen to him read through a shopping list such are his comforting dulcet tones. Stephen Fry in America - Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry in America - Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry has always loved America, in fact he came very close to being born there. ... more

Here, his fascination for the country and its
people sees him embarking on an epic journey
across America, visiting each of its 50 states to
discover how such a huge diversity of people,
cultures, languages, beliefs and landscapes
combine to create such a remarkable nation.
Starting on the eastern seaboard, Stephen zig-zags
across the country in his London taxicab, talking
to its hospitable citizens, listening to its
music, visiting its landmarks, viewing small-town
life and America's breath-taking landscapes -
following wherever his curiosity leads him.
Stephen meets a collection of remarkable
individuals - American icons and unsung local
heroes alike. Stephen starts his epic journey on
the east coast and zig-zags across America,
stopping in every state from Maine to Hawaii. En
route he discovers the South Side of Chicago with
blues legend Buddy Guy, catches up with Morgan
Freeman in Mississippi, strides around with Ted
Turner on his Montana ranch, marches with Zulus in
New Orleans' Mardi Gras, and drums with the Sioux
Nation in South Dakota; joins a Georgia family for
thanksgiving, 'picks' with Bluegrass hillbillies,
and finds himself in a Tennessee garden full of
dead bodies. Whether in a club for failed
gangsters (yes, those are real bullet holes) or
celebrating Halloween in Salem (is there anywhere
better?), Stephen is welcomed by the people of
America - mayors, sheriffs, newspaper editors,
park rangers, teachers and hobos, bringing to life
the oddities and splendours of each locale. A
celebration of the magnificent and the eccentric,
the beautiful and the strange, Stephen Fry in
America is our author's homage to this
extraordinary country.

MY MY IT'S AMERICAN FRY Review with images

AdvantagesGreat compliment to the TV series, full of information

DisadvantagesVery heavy book so not ideal to take stateside with you

"Iím a big fan of Stephen Fry; if Iím honest I would happily listen to him read through a shopping list such are his comforting dulcet tones. I also have a strong desire to visit America Ė real America that is, not a few days in Disney land Florida or a quick shopping trip to New York. So when I heard that Fry and America were combining to produce a BBC series in which he gets stuck into the real underbelly of the USA I couldnít have been more pleased. ..." Read review

Come Fry with Me - Stephen Fry in America

AdvantagesInformative and Fun

DisadvantagesNone For Me

"...shown and the fact that Stephen Fry is the center of it. It brings the mixture of wit and intelligence that he is best known for along with a sympathetic look at things that some of us may find uncomfortable. My favourite examples of this are the research facility in Tennessee where they watch how bodies decompose to allow medical examiners to get an accurate time of death, along with the fact that he showed the rich and poor, good and bad just as ..." Fantastic read - Has inspired me to do the same!

AdvantagesInteresting, inspiring, good value for money

DisadvantagesSome parts were short

"...love America, and I love Stephen Fry! This book is the perfect combination! Ever since I was little, I always had this idea that I wanted to visit every single state, and since reading this book, it's reconfirmed my dream once more! One of the problems for me was that the book just isn't long enough! For some states, there are only 2 pages dedicated to them, and he basically just drives through and drives back out again! But other than that, it's ..." Read review
