Rocks of Ages - Stephen Jay Gould Rocks of Ages - Stephen Jay Gould
Revered and eminently readable essayist Stephen Jay Gould has once again rendered the ... more
complex simple, this time mending the seeming
split between the two "Rocks of Ages", science and
religion. He quickly, and rightfully, admits that
his thesis is not new, but one broadly accepted by
many scientists and theologians. Gould begins by
suggesting that Darwin has been misconstrued--that
while some religious thinkers have used divinity
to prove the impossibility of evolution, Darwin
would have never done the reverse.Gould eloquently
lays out not "a merely diplomatic solution" to
rectify the physical and metaphysical, but "a
principled position on moral and intellectual
grounds", central to which is the elegant concept
of "non-overlapping magisteria". (Gould defines
"magisteria" as a "four-bit" word meaning domain
of authority in teaching.) Essentially, science
and religion can't be unified, but neither should
they be in conflict; each has its own discrete
magisteria, the natural world belonging
exclusively to science and the moral to
religion.Gould's argument is both lucid and
convincing as he cites past religious and
scientific greats (including a particularly
touching section on Darwin himself). Regardless of
your persuasions, religious or scientific, Gould
holds up his end of the conversation with
characteristic respect and intelligence. --Paul
Hughes

The Lying Stones of Marrakech: Penultimate Reflections in Natural History - Stephen Jay Gould The Lying Stones of Marrakech: Penultimate Reflections in Natural History - Stephen Jay Gould
Stephen Jay Gould's monumental series of popular science essays, started in the 1970s, ... more
approaches its close withThe Lying Stones of
Marrakech. The subtitle, "Penultimate Reflections
in Natural History", indicates that the next
volume will be the last. Back at the beginning,
inThe Panda's ThumbandThe Flamingo's Smile, Gould
concerned himself with zoological and
paleontological issues, demonstrating how the
curiosities of nature--the bodged jobs, if you
like--were more revealing of the workings of
evolution and natural selection than its
perfection. His focus has changed somewhat, and
the current offering reflects a preoccupation with
the intellectual history of science. The results
may be less immediately appealing than Gould's
earlier accounts of biological freaks and
oddities, and the effort required of the reader
greater, but the rewards are immense. These essays
deal with the evolution of key concepts in the
history of science, showing in every case that the
accepted textbook accounts of their development
are at the least over-simplifications, at worst
downright falsifications resulting from
misunderstanding, prejudice or even malice. The
title essay deals with the case of an 18th-century
fossil-collector duped into accepting as genuine
fossils an absurd (to modern eyes) collection of
forgeries including life-like lizards complete
with skin and eyes, cobwebs and bees taking nectar
from flowers. As always with Gould, context is
everything. He patiently explores the intellectual
assumptions underlying the wretched Dr Beringer's
mistake and shows how, far from being a piece of
misguided folly, it illuminates a profound and
serious contemporary debate about the origins of
the Earth and the laws governing the workings of
the Universe. The remaining essays share the same
spirit of dedicated enquiry. Gould's delight, or
even exultation, in the life of the mind and the
workings of science is inspiring in the highest
degree. Readers familiar with his earlier essays
will encounter many old friends (Darwin, Huxley,
Lyell, L Lavoisier, Richard Owen among others) and
meet new ones; the preoccupation with baseball is
as strong as ever, though references to his
beloved Gilbert and Sullivan are, mercifully some
might think, absent. Many will regret the imminent
closure of this remarkable series of volumes,
butThe Lying Stones of Marrakechis an intellectual
feast and sufficient unto the day. --Robin
Davidson

Gardener's Pocket Bible by Roni Jay
Review of Gardener's Pocket Bible - Roni Jay by  Martinscholes

Advantages: They DID fit a quart in a pint pot!
Disadvantages: Not a single one

...The Gardener's Pocket Bible, by Roni Jay, is an excellent little book. It is a little bit bigger than average pocket size, but would probably fit quite snugly inside the leg pocket of a pair of cargo trousers! The book is 178 pages in length and is described by Roni Jay as a collaborative effort between Roni Jay, her mum and dad, Jill and Tony, their friend Will, who is a professional gardener, Laurie Taylor (he was the proof-reader, I think) and James Belsey, to whom she also dedicated the book. There was also a poorly fax machine who helped in the proceedings. With that cast of six (leaving the fax machine out of this, for the moment!) one might expect this book to be a sort of camel of a gardening book, you know, the elderly joke about a camel being a horse designed by a committee? Not a bit of it! The book is eminently... Read review

The Cook's Pocket Bible by Roni Jay
Review of Cook's Pocket Bible - Roni Jay by  Martinscholes

Advantages: An even better book than you could expect
Disadvantages: Not a single one

...The Cook's Pocket Bible by Roni Jay is an ideal size to fit in the large pocket of an apron, as the book is 174 pages in length. The book is edited by Richard Craze and Roni thanks her dad for helping her with the wine section, for, as she points out, she has a "lack of enthusiasm for drinking fine wines." She also thanked chef Matthew Lamb (cool name for a chef, don't you think?) for his help in reading through the entire manuscript, and adding some clever tips of his own. Roni Jay is a rarity in my opinion, as she is the kind of writer who acknowledges the great and invaluable help from a variety of people who usually never get a mention from other authors of "how to books" who like to pretend that they "did all the work on the book myself." The book is nicely laid out. It starts with the all-important charts and tables... Read review

Not your usual Stephen King
Review of The Colorado Kid - Stephen King by  sunmeilan

Advantages: Good characters
Disadvantages: Book doesn't end so much as peter out

...Introduction This book caught my attention because it was in the crime fiction section, which is not where I would expect to find a Stephen King novel. As the novel was so short and Stephen King usually writes much longer books, I thought it must be another Stephen King. It was, however, by the Stephen King, so intrigued, I took it home. The book is included in a series of books called Hard Case Crime and was reminiscent of books by the likes of Dashiell Hammett and other authors of the noir genre. The author Stephen King needs little introduction. He is best known as a thriller writer of such novels as Carrie, Dolores Claiborne and The Shining. This book was a relief to King's fans, who had heard rumours that his novel-writing days were over. The story Stephanie McCann is a twenty-one year old intern at a newspaper on a small...
