grim but good
Review of Steve Turner by sid

Advantages: brill

...Steve Turner Upto date For me steve Turner is a negative poet but yet brilliant. He expresses life into poetry exactly how we feels, one of my favourite poem is called 'The Gap', it is about of how at school you have friends which are part of you and then you leave and move away, and don't see each other for years and when you do you have nothing left to say to them. Steve Turner says it is better if you don't see each other because you can always wonder what the other is doing. And you don't have to deal with let down. Another of my favourite poems is called 'The Appeal' it is about third world countries and thier people, he talks about famine and he says they are lucky to be slim. They live the simple life and if they knew any better they would become like us. He is a brilliant poet and appeals to all ages.... Read review

The Day I Fell Down the Toilet
Review of The Day I Fell Down the Toilet and Other Poems - Steve Turner by RClure

Advantages: Fantastic funny poetry to encourage children to read
Disadvantages: Your child will constantly read it out to you

...in verses but there is a mixture of rhyming poems, very short poems, and ones oozing with alliteration and similes. I have used this book in the past during literacy to study and compare different types of poems. *** ILLUSTRATIONS *** The black and white illustrations are supplied by David Mostyn. They are very much comic black and white pen art that always relate perfectly to the text on the page. *** SELECTION OF POEMS *** This is where I've got to be careful without going on and on! It is clear when reading these that Steve Turner is still very much a child at heart. There are many poems that include those words that make children giggle for hours such as 'bottom' (especially when their teacher says it!!!). He also includes some topical, thought provoking topics about the environment and creation. Here are a few of my favourites... Read review

Scottish Hound of the Baskervilles
Review of The Loch - Steve Alten by pdoyle007

Advantages: Excellent and exciting story
Disadvantages: Scottish dialogue

...and possibly facing the death penalty. He returns home to the man who drove him away in the first place, his drunk, unfaithful father to offer him support during the trial, only to find his father intends to blame the death on the Loch Ness monster. As the circus around the trial grows it becomes clear not everything is as it seems, the courtroom becomes a media debate on the existance of Nessie and at the same time boaters are going missing and more and more monster hunters are gathering on the Loch's waters. It's up to Zach to face his fears and witht he help of his friends solve the mystery and save his fathers life at the same time. VERDICT: The book is excellent and a real page turner. What starts out as a slightly far fetched idea is given good scientific backing and an engaging and enthusiastic backstory by Steve Alten. The lead character... Read review
