Street Fighter 2. The fighting game that popularised the genre, in much the same way DOOM did for the first person shooter. There were other similar games before, but none that did it so well as SF2. Iconic characters facing off and trading blows until one was knocked unconscious.

The word "classic" is used with very little care nowadays, with any game (or movie or ... more
song) that manages to stay popular for more than a week earning the accolade.Street Fighter II, though, is the real McCoy, not only being one of the world's few perfect video games but having almost by itself managed to give birth to the whole one-on-one beat-'em-up genre. That was a long time ago, though, andStreet Fighter II(Street Fighter Iwas almost entirely rubbish, which was why theStreet Fighter Alphaseries was created to help erase it from history) is now celebrating its 15th birthday, primarily through the release ofHyper Street Fighter II. This is essentially a compilation of all the different versions of the game throughout the years, including the original, Champion Edition, Turbo, Super and Super Turbo.Instead of just including each game separately on the disc, each of the versions are mixed in together so that you can have, for example, the original's Ryu going up againstSuper Street Fighter II Turbo's Chun-Li. These sort of details are for the real hardcore though and should not detract from the fact that this is still one of the most fun and accessible video games ever made. So whether you buy it as a celebration of one of gaming's brightest stars or just because you want to play a fun, unpretentious video game, you'll not find anything better than this. --David Jenkins

Hyper fighting is a version of SF2 I never actually encountered till I bought it. The one I played most was the superlative Super Nintendo version. Some of the additions here include the ability to play as the final four "Boss" characters, playing as the same character in VS mode, and some new moves for most of the characters. This version also features the standard Live Arcade additions, such as leaderboards, online multiplayer, and stupid borders around the screen.
I bought the game mainly for the online multiplayer. Which works well, sometimes. Often there is such a bad connection between you and your opponent that connecting blows becomes next to impossible. Playing online was fun, but slightly disappointing.
In a straight VS match on the same console there is still nothing to beat this game. The purity and simplicity of the fighting system means that a match between good players turns into a ballet of tricks and psyche-outs. This is certainly something that newer games never seemed to get right.
In terms of the graphics, they seem superior to the SNES version, with some extra frames of animation, but they were probably included in the arcade original. Some tacky borders kind of mar the presentation, which is otherwise good. Sound is pretty much how I remember it, although the elephants in Dhalsim's stage seem to trumpet a little too often for my liking! (I'm sure they used to be quieter. I suppose that's elephants for you.)
My main gripe with the game is that it's just too hard! On the easiest setting I still can't beat the game. I used to think I was pretty good 10 years ago, but the increased speed and new moves get me every time.
In summation, this is a competent port that plays best in VS mode on the same console. Online multiplayer is blighted (for me at least) by the lag, and the singleplayer is frustratingly hard. It could also have been 400 points instead of 800, it feels a bit cheeky to charge so much for such an old game. You might even be better off buying the anniversary collection for cheap on the original Xbox format, although you'd be missing out on the online functionality.
