About The Game

Street Fighter IV is a fighting game that was released by Capcom in 2008. It is available on the PS3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, iOS and coin-operated arcade machines.

Price and Availability

You can buy the game on Amazon for £10.99 new. I haven’t looked in any high street stores for it but it seems to be readily available on the internet.

The Characters

There are a total of nineteen characters in the game. Which includes many old faces as well as six new characters.

The new characters are:

• Abel – A French mixed martial artist.
• Crimson Viper – A female American spy.
• Rufus – An overweight kung fu fighter.
• El Fuerte – A Mexican luchador.
• Seth – The new boss character.
• Gouken – The elder brother of Akuma.

The returning characters are:

• Ryu
• Ken
• Chun-Li
• E. Honda
• Blanka
• Zangief
• Guile
• Dhalsim
• Balrog
• Vega
• Sagat
• M. Bison
• Akuma

I remember some of the returning characters from playing Street Fighter on my old Super Nintendo when I was a kid. My favourite character was always Chun-Li, so I was pleased to find out that she was on this game too. That is, until I actually played the game. In the old game Chun-Li was this pretty, skinny girl who could fight against the best of them. In the new game however she appears in the same outfit and with the same hairstyle but her body looks like she has taken a huge amount of steroids. She has been all beefed up like a female weight lifter. I know this is more true to how she might look if it was real life and it helps explain her strength etc. but I think that something has been lost with these kinds of changes to the characters.

Gameplay

The game features the usual type of gameplay you have come to expect from street fighter. Two characters fighting to knock each other out in front of various different backdrops. There are various new types of special moves which unless you are pretty good at these kinds of games can be a bit tricky to execute. It is a typical button bash game, in which you basically push buttons fast and see how it turns out. Once you have played for a while you begin to figure out what button combo’s do what. You can choose how many rounds you fight for which is good. You can choose as little as one round or as many as seven.

I completed the arcade mode on the easiest level. With the right character (Dhalsim in my case) you can get through it within around half an hour at most. The penultimate level is against your rival and is quite tricky. The final level against Seth is almost impossible, I had to keep changing characters each time I died until I found one that worked (well, in the end my fiancée did it for me!). Seth is extremely hard. If you manage to win round one then on round two it gets even harder as he shows even more abilities than he had before, I was getting thrown around all over the place!

My Thoughts

I like this type of game when I am in the right mood for them. I do not like the way they have “improved” the characters, as I said before I preferred it when Chun-Li was super skinny and super strong.
