Does a 2D fighter have a place in a 3D world? Read on and find out.
While the genre of game isn't renowned for a strong plot or storyline, each character does come with a small movie at the start of the game and another at the end. This is basically Capcoms way of:
a) Introducing new characters. b) Catching up with old characters and filling in the 15 year gap. c) Letting us know where the characters loyalties lie. d) Introducing us to their Rival.
Its quite a smart way of carrying the story along and letting you know who's batting for what team. The cut scenes are only a couple of minutes long and look like something out of a Japanese Amine cartoon, but are very fitting with the theme of the game.
You've got a few different game modes to choose from, the 2 you will the most will be the single-player Arcade mode and the two-player Versus mode. While there are a few other game modes, most of them are obsolete or not interesting enough for long term play, but perhaps the novelty may provide with a quick fix or fun.
The Arcade mode plays very similar to that of the original Street Fighter with only a few changes. The first thing your probably going to notice in your first fight will be how smoothly the game flows, it looks great and comes with virtually no frame rate slow down even when things get messy. The animations flow from one to another flawlessly, it just feels natural, like it should. I was impressed at how well the game ran. The game uses cell shading and looks absolutely superb, each of the fighters are bright and colourful adding to the vibrancy of the game.
The great thing about Street Fighter 4 is that it feels like Street Fighter 2. The button commands for the moves have remained the same, the moves look and behave the same as they did in SF2, and this just isn't the Special Moves I'm talking about, while there have been some minor changes, the majority of attacks, whether it be Guile's Medium Kick or Blanka's Hard Punch it all feels the same. But at the same time, the game still feels different enough to be an entirely new game.
Some of the new features in the game are the Ultra and Super Combos. The Super combo powered by the Super gauge and the Ultra combo powered by the Rage meter. They are both devastating attacks if you can pull them off, however usually require a longer more complex button command to do so. The Ex attack is also new, by pressing 2 face buttons your fighter will power up for the Ex attack, a stronger attack that knocks your opponent down. But the real strength behind the Ex attack is its ability to absorb 1 attack without effecting the move. You still take damage (although if you avoiding being hit for a short while after, your health will regain) but it adds a great deal of strategy to the games and a fighter that can use the Ex attack wisely has an extremely strong weapon in his arsenal.
There are a decent amount of characters to chose from, with plenty more to be unlocked through Arcade mode. A lot of old ones, but also a few new faces which are a welcome edition. The majority of the new characters come with a more complex moves list. This was Capcoms chance to experiment and while it may take a bit longer to learn to play with these characters, its worth it as each one offers an entirely different playing experience. If I did have one compliant bout the fighters is that there are too many Ryu's. Around 5 characters have a very similar move list to Ryu and Ken, too similar, although these characters may have different strengths and weaknesses (for example Kens faster, but Ryus stronger and hits for more) its all too sameish.
It wont take you long to burn through the Arcade mode. There are a few unlockables, other than characters, in the game, including different coloured costumes, however it requires a fair amount to get these and in the end it doesn't feel worth it. Where Street Fighter 4 really starts to shine is in the Versus mode, grab a friend and a second controller and you have a game that will keep you entertained for hours upon hours. Playing with yourself (now, now) is fun, however with a mate is 10 times better. You can also take your Street Fighting talents online and play in several game modes, rated matches etc.
Overall Street Fighter 4 is an enjoyable experience, the only downside is without a friend it can get quite boring. But who wouldn't want a chance to relive their childhood? The game is worth a buy, just ensure you have Xbox Live or a second controller.
Advantages: Great Game Play, Awesome Retro Feel, Pure Street Fighter Fun Disadvantages: Other than the price and one or two audio annoyances, none!
...today able to play test Street Fighter 4. I'm not going to lay this out as I normally would my reviews, as this is a preview that I wish to get up ASAP. The overall fluidity and appearence of the game is phenomenal. From the jaw droping art style of the intro sequence to the animation of the characters, the style of this game consistantly hits you in the face with a big fat slice of Awesome pie. At first, it's weird to see the Characters having such ... ...the feel of the classic Street Fighters - you've got a winner. Which leads me to the next point. How does it play? Over the years, so many people have worried that any 3D version of street fighter just will not play as Street Fighter should. But let me tell you right now, that you can abolish this worry from your mind because this game plays the same way Street Figher 2 plays apparet from one or two character changes. And I mean it. You could probably ...

...been a long time since Street Fighter 2, so when i heard Street Fighter 4 had came out for the Xbox 360, i was straight down the shop to get it! The graphics, now 3d, still are in the style of Street Fighter 2. When fighting theres still things going on in the background. The control system hasnt changed much at all, the good old down round to right + punch is hadouken, for newbies this is all you will need :P. The arcade mode is very good, going ... ...after that you fight Seth. Whoever invented him needs to be fired as he is very hard to beat! Online gameplay is good but can become annoying if you have the setting selected where when you are in arcade mode, you can be interrupted by anyone who wishes to fight you online. ...

Advantages: Fast exciting play, Unique special and ultra attacks for every character Disadvantages: Short health bars leading to relatively short games
I've been playing street fighter since the age of 9 in the ex alpha series. However, Street Fighter IV is a totally different experience in that the overall game speed appears to be faster. In addition, there is a new attack called the focus attack. To perform this attack, the medium punch and medium kick have to be held down simultaneously. This absorbs one attack from your opponent. Thereafter, you should release the two buttons for a counter attack ... ...the counter will become unblockable. There are 25 playable characters in the game ranging from the originals ryu and ken to the new boss seth. Other notable aspects of the game include super attacks which require a super metre (which builds up when you hit your oppenent), and ultra attacks which require a revenge metre (that builds when you get hit by your opponent). Every special and ultra attack is unique for that specific character. I feel that ...

Advantages: good skin, good grip, strong D-Pad, trigger Disadvantages: no analogue, price, specific to genre of game
The Mad Catz Official StreetFighterIV FightPad , is a third party controller for the XBOX360, I am not usually a fan of third party controllers, because whats the point, of paying an extra £30 for a controller that really is only specific to one game, you have to really like the game to go all out like that, and I am an amazing fan of streetfighter, and I had some GAME points that needed using up, so I thought I would treat myself to this controller.
The controllers shape is slightly different to the shape of the usual Xbox360 controller, one main difference on the controller is there is no analogue sticks, I don?t use the analogue stick much in a game like streetfighter, but it really does mean that the controller is being specific to one genre of games, even one game. On the back of the controller there is a switch that means ...
Advantages: Feels more comfortable than original controller and has a turbo feature Disadvantages: D-pad is still not improved
Ok so I have not long recieved this from ebay and because of all the hype from these controllers being sold out they have now increased in price on the secondary marker. I managed to get one for £50 which I thought was a good deal until I used it. The reason why I purchased this was so that it can replace my normal xbox controller as the D-pad sucks for fighting games. As soon as I recieved this I tried it on StreetFighter4 straight away and to my surprise I sort of found it worst than the original controller. The D-pad on the control is similar to the sega saturn one but only worst. Its hard to pull out the moves on this control as when you need to input specific commands the D-pad feels loose and is all one big button and you find yourself doing a dragon punch instead of a hadouken. Whilst it does look great and varies in different ...
Advantages: Great Fighting Game for PC Disadvantages: Can't see one
for me, timing is crucial in this game. Players need to know when to block, to counter and to attack your opponent. As blindly bashing your keyboard or controller won't help you.
Windows version additions
The Windows version of StreetFighterIV includes all the features found in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox360. The game features online play via Games for Windows - LIVE and Steam, with built-in voice chat and PC-exclusive achievements, but no cross-platform playability. The windows version also features higher resolutions, and three new freely selectable visual styles, named "Ink", "Watercolor" and "Posterize".
My thoughts
There aren't many good fighting games for PC nowadays and this game really covers that hollow gap. I am not a big fighting game fan but I am a fan of StreetFighter series since I was a kid ...
