A few weeks ago now I woke up with a really horrid taste in my throat, this for me is normally the sign of the start of a cold and cough. Even though the amount of colds and coughs that I now get has been reduced (I used to get a t least 4 or 5 a year) when I do get one it is really horrid and will linger for ages. I may have mentioned in other reviews however though that I am not a fan of taking tablets, I much prefer to try a natural remedy but one thing that I do not mind taking is a throat sweet and it may seem silly and a waste of money to some but I enjoy them for taking the vile taste away as much as actually stopping the soreness of my throat! I have tried many things ranging from Lockets to Tunes but the only sweet that I have found works is the Strepsils Extra.
It is important to note that there is a difference between the regular Strepsils and the Strepsils Extra so be mindful of this when you are browsing the shelves. There is the most obvious difference between the two products
and that is the price. The Strepsils extra will cost around the £4.50 mark whereas the regular product will cost about £3.50 so there is that little extra cost but for me and in my opinion there is a difference, especially after trying both throat sweets. The Strepsils extra can be found in most pharmacies as well as high street supermarkets and even stores such as Wilkinson’s and Boots although the price will vary slightly dependant on where you buy them from.
The Strepsils come in a recyclable cardboard box and there is plenty of information on the throat sweet to tell you what it is all about so you can clearly see what you are getting before you even make a purchase which I think is good. On the front of the mainly white in colour box is the Strepsils brand name and it is also clearly marked that you are buying the ‘Extra’ product. There is also a very clear looking picture of what each sweet will look like. There are a number of flavours that these sweets will come in, raspberry, blackcurrant and lemon and having a bit of a citrus taste I always go for the lemon lozenge. The flavour that you buy is also noted on the front as well as the number of sweets, I have always known this to be 36 sweets in each box.
On the reverse of the box is information on the product such as directions for use, ingredients in each lozenge and how the product will work. We are told that they are an antiseptic and an analgesic, I take this to mean that they will help with the pain as well as try and helping with the infection. You are told to take no more than 12 sweets in one day and if you are over 6 years old then you are free to take them.
To remove a lozenge all you need to do is pop one out of the foil packet. They are round in shape and look like a boiled sweet. They even taste like a sweet as opposed to a form of medication and for me this is a big plus point as I think the mixture of a horrid tasting lozenge as well as the bad taste in the throat would result in a vile taste altogether! The sweet is best sucked slowly as not only will it last longer but if you go to bite it you will hurt your teeth, it really is that hard! After a while you will get to the centre of the sweet and the liquid juices will emerge and it is this that really does have a soothing effect on my sore throat. The liquid seems to be more in the extra product compared to the regular and lasted longer as well.
I can make each sweet last around 10 minutes and because they have a good citrus taste to them this is left lingering which is a good thing. I cannot say that these lozenges will cure a sore throat but they will definitely help with the pain of one.
In summary, I have no problem in recommending the Strepsils extra as I really do find them very effective. They are a little expensive but I don’t mind paying for something that works for me. They do come in a variety of flavours so it is an individual preference but the lemon one works for me! The after taste is good and they do help with a sore throat.
