Well in my last op,I wrote about my sore throat and what I was taking to ease it ;this time my hubby,Tom has got it and he wants something much stronger that’s his words not mine.
He went to the chemist for as you know a sore throat is caused by a virus, and no antibiotics will shift it,it has to just run it’s course. Of course Tom’s sore throat is all my fault,I had it first so I am passing it round.
The three of us are sitting here like general hospital, the only really fit one among us is Roy,our grandson but he hates to feel out of it all so we let him suck his lollies and drink his lemonade as if he is a walking wounded.
We are all drinking plenty of liquids, but Tom’s chosen fix it all is strepsil lozenges.
These are bought from any chemist and there are many different varieties I think Tom was a bit surprised when he found this out so he played safe and bought the original sort.
There are lemon and honey, blackcurrant, menthol, black cherry, and original.
Anyway back to the one Tom has it is round similar to a boiled sweet, and red. They come wrapped in a box which contains 12 strepsils in a protective plastic cover there are two lots of 12 in this box and you pop them out as needed.
I tasted one with him and they are quite pleasant but seem to deaden the mouth,I haven’t taken enough to let it affect my throat but Tom assures me his throat is feeling a little numb. The box itself is square and white with a picture of a red strepsil on it and the words strepsils in large black letters. Underneath this it says original medicine for sore throats.
On the back of the box it tells us how strepsils work, they provide fast and effective relief from sore throats and mouth infections as each lozenge contains a combination of two ant-bacterials to fight the infections which cause sore throats.
There is a warning that it could be unsuitable if you are intolerant to carbohydrate and may occasionally cause allergic reaction, including asthma. This is more common if you are allergic to asprin.
I can’t see much of any particular ingredient, they contain peppermint oil,and lots of other oils so I would recommend anyone thinking of buying these should read the back of the box first or better still ask the chemist.
Tom swears they are making his throat feel easier and they are a pleasant tasting sort of cherry I think. I would take great care with chidren as they could easily choke on one and it does warn against this.
All in all I will recommend them as Tom certainly seems happier now the recommended dose is one to be sucked every two to three hours.
They are £3.25 from the local chemist but if you shop around you may get them cheaper.
Advantages: Many varieties for different symptoms. Disadvantages: Expensive
...I am actually taking about Strepsils instead. Confusion ends here!
There is no convincing medical research that proves that antiseptic lozenge and sprays actually work for sore throats. Some preparations contain a local anaesthetic, which may help reduce the pain but build up sensitisation.

Advantages: They have an anaesthetic action and can combat bacteria Disadvantages: They didn't help my sore throat. Most sore throats are viral - not bacterial. A couple of the ingredients some people consider to be a cause for concern.
...or barbed wire. The Strepsils haven't helped me at all.
Strepsils are lozenges by the way. They look like round boiled sweets and are about 1.75cm in diameter. Mine are 'allegedly' blackcurrant flavour, but you can also buy other sorts such as: Honey & Lemon, Menthol & Eucalyptus, Black Cherry, Original (whatever that means) and ones that are sugar free or contain vitamin C. You pay your money and take your choice. There are 24 lozenges in a packet.
... ...As I've already mentioned, Strepsils only combats bacteria - which, there is a good chance, hasn't actually caused our sore throat.. Admitedly the anaesthetic action could be of use, providing it hits the right spot.
As you may have guessed I'm none to impressed with Strepsils.
To combat a dreaded sore throat instead I'd suggest ...
(1) We should drink lots of warm liquids to keep our body fluids nicely topped up.
(2) And boo! Cut out alcohol ...

...result. A box of 24 Strepsils will cost you around £1.79 and they are available from supermarkets, Boots, Superdrug and chemists. I bought mine in the Big W.
Each lozenge contains antiseptics which are supposed to rid you of your cough and sore throat. Now the question is: Do Strepsils live up to such a promise? Well not really.

't going to do anything about shifting my sore throat.
After a closer inspection of the box I find that these are not throat sweets at all. They're a food supplement.
DAMMIT! I feel cheated. They took advantage of my fluffy head and made me buy something I didn't want!
Isn't 'Strepsils' synonymous with throat lozenges? Don't you assume that's what you're getting?
Humph humph humph.
These are supposed to boost your immune system to stop you getting ill as they're packed with zinc and vit C. All very well, but I'd have needed them last week. I want me some proper strepsils with good old traditional antiseptic and anaesthetic action.
I'm very cross with Mr. Strepsil. He viciously traded on his name and made me pick up the wrong thing. I'm not feeling well! You can't expect me to read anything more closely than I did.
On that ...
Most throat infections are actually caused by viral infections up to 80% so in most cases you'll not find antibacterial lozenges of any use. Only 20% of you out there will actually gain any benefit from the advertised ingredient.
So what’s the point in taking them? Well apart from the fact that they contain allot of lubricants (glycerol etc.) which act to ease that ruff throat feeling. These specific lozenge’s contain zinc which increases the ability of cells to respond immunogenically. If you like, it wakes the cell up to some danger!

Available in Boots for a mere £2.99, these little beauties could be the saviour to all your sore throat needs?say hello to Tyrozets.
In the past, I?ve tried various throat ?remedies? such as Strepsils, and with all respect to them, they have little or no impact on calming down the problem, let alone even getting close to curing it. So these small tablets ? which contain anaesthetic and are behind the counter at Boots due to their strength ? are a potential godsend.
They come in red and orange packaging that contains 24 lozenges, in two plastic tubes of 12. 8 can be taken in a 24-hour period, but if you need to take that many that I?d seriously consider consulting your doctor!
The faint aniseed taste is a slight disadvantage in my view, as anything liquorice based is terrible and disgusting?Fact! But after sucking on a lozenge ...
