I hate to have a sore throat, but I probably hate to suck on a throat tablet even more. I detest the taste of every single one I have ever had the misfortune to eat. Probably the ones we buy the most often are the Strepsils brand. I know these come in a range of different ‘flavours’ but the Original ones seem to be the ones we always have lurking at the back of our medicine cupboard. The last time I had one of these I remember it tasting quite unpleasant.

We buy the pack of 24 lozenges for £2.60which come in one of those blister type packets which are housed within the familiar looking Strepsils cardboard box. They are medium sized and flattish and red and they are reasonably okay once they are initially inside your mouth but I soon find that once I am less than half way through I have to take it out. It makes the back of my throat feel a bit numb and the whole of mouth just feels hot.

These Original Strepsils are possibly the worst of a bad bunch, I have tried their fruity flavoured ones but there is always the background taste of a ‘cough’ sweet in them all. They do marginally sooth my throat (as well as numb it) but I just don’t like the hot feeling I get, especially when you forget you have just sucked one then go to take a bite of food or have a drink of something. Horrible!

These are no good for me if I am trying to ease a ticklish cough – they are better for a sore throat but I always find they make me thirsty too. I think this is because they are so hot. I tend to suck on one about twice a day (but only if my throat feels really really bad) and I can just about get away with this but to be honest I just find them too unpleasant to take more than this. They have a very limited effect on my in easing the pain and discomfort of a sore throat, though I know some people swear by them.

On the plus side, I always find these have an extremely long shelf life. So, if you only use them very occasionally you can probably be pretty sure there will still be some left in the pack and they will still be within their ‘use by’ date.

Just not for me.
