When my daughter suggested we went to a Subway before one of our visits to the cinema, I looked at her with a searching look "Where? Have you gone mad? What do you want to go to a subway for? Especially at night with that many weirdoes walking under them?" Here's me thinking about those horrible little underpasses under main roads where people walk through.
"No," she said "not an under the road subway, subway, but the Subway restaurant, a place to eat." I was still a little sceptical, little did I know she meant a sandwich restaurant.

Christine has chosen the one nearest the cinema at the Cornerhouse, Nottingham which she usually goes to, not knowing what I was to expect when I got here I am immediately engulfed with the delicious smell of freshly baked bread.

The shop is brightly lit and decorated with the white, green and yellow colours of the franchise. The place is very clean and orderly and the staff are all young, polite, efficient and give service with a smile.

Christine points up to the bright pictured menu of the various fillings and says me to, "Choose one. Don't worry," she says, "it's all healthy what filling would you like?" Good grief, what a choice I have.

Prices range from between £2.30 and £3.00 for a standard 6 inch sandwich.
A foot long you add £1.70 to the advertised price. For a meal you add a further £1.20 which means you get a regular sized drink and a choice of crisp or cookie. If you don't want a bread roll you can choose a wrap for £1.00 in addition to the advertised price.

Ham: Sliced ham.
Chicken Breast: Sliced roasted chicken breast
Roast Beef: Sliced roast beef
SUBWAY Club: Sliced turkey breast, roast beef, ham
Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki: Teriyaki glazed chicken strips, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, green peppers, olives and sweet onion sauce.
Turkey Breast: Sliced turkey breast
Turkey Breast and Ham: Sliced turkey breast and ham and
Veggie Delite: Vegetarian patty.
Chicken Breast, Turkey Breast and Ham: Sliced turkey breast and ham and Sliced roasted chicken breast
Chicken & Bacon Ranch: Chicken breast strips, cheddar cheese, bacon, ranch dressing.
Chipotle Southwest Cheese Steak: Hot steak, grilled onions and peppers, melted cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, green peppers and Chipotle Southwest sauce
Italian BMT®: Genoa salami, pepperoni, ham, cheese
Meatball Marinara: Hot meatballs in marinara sauce, cheese
Spicy Italian: Genoa salami, pepperoni
Cheese Steak: Hot steak, onions and peppers, melted cheese
Tuna: Tuna salad made with mayonnaise,
SUBWAY Melt: Sliced turkey breast, ham, bacon, melted cheese
Turkey Breast: Sliced turkey breast
Seafood Sensation: Crabstick and prawns in a seafood sauce

I have to make my choice quickly as the shop was rapidly filling and a large queue is forming behind me.
"What bread?" I am asked, "Honey Oat or Wheat Bread, Italian Herbs & Cheese, Hearty Italian, deli style roll or a wrap." I opt for the Italian Herbs and Cheese roll,
"Toasted?" Oh , why not I would try anything once.
"6 inch or a foot long?" Christine asks.

Because of the vast choice of fillings we have decided on a foot long each as Subway always cut these in half which means I can choose one filling and Christine can choose another and we will share half of each sandwich. For Christine has chosen her usual the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki and I think I will have the Seafood Sensation.

Christine is rattling off our choices to the Sandwich artist as they like to be called, when I see the size of the roll and then the portions put onto it I cannot believe how they make their business viable.

"What salad would you like?" What? On top of all that? I will never get through it all. I have a choice of Iceberg lettuce, cucumber, red onion, green peppers, olives, sliced gherkins, hot peppers, sweet corn and tomatoes. The cheese is optional but included in the price unless you have double cheese then it is 40pence extra, but one thing is always missing from a Subway sandwich and that is butter, no butter or spread is used on any sandwich.

Ok, I think that's it and then they ask, "What condiments would you like?" These were the standard salt and pepper, light mayonnaise, Chipotle Southwest dressing, Ranch dressing, Sweet Onion dressing, HP sauce, and Honey Mustard. Not knowing what to try I am offered a little taste of each and I liked the Chipotle Southwest dressing, a spicy chilli mayonnaise that tantalizes my taste buds and makes my mouth water.

Cutting the sandwich in half the Sandwich Artist wraps it in greaseproof paper brightly printed with big red tomatoes and the Subway logo and places it with a handful of napkins into its very own plastic sleeve.
"Make it a meal." Says Christine, we choose the cookie to have along with our sandwich and diet Coke.

We find ourselves a seat and I begin to unwrap my very first Subway sandwich which is bursting at the seams. Now how am I going to get my mouth around this without making a mess. What is Christine doing? Ah… She has opened her sandwich and is picking off the vegetables and munching on them. Oh well here goes I will try the same.

The vegetables are all crisp and fresh and not a limp lettuce leaf in sight, and the South West sauce has a little heat and spiciness that compliment the vegetables. Now that looks more manageable, so, here goes and I take my first bite from the rest of the sandwich. Mmmm…my eyes close as the taste of the bread is so fresh and melts in my mouth. The seafood filling is large chunks of crabstick and prawns in a very light seafood sauce, enough to bind it together and the whole sandwich causes a taste explosion erupts in my mouth as it is so tasty.

Why did I worry how I would get through this because I have soon demolished the first half and I'm ready for the next half.

Now this half is filled with large chunks of cooked chicken lightly coated in a teriyaki sauce with the addition of extra red onion and green peppers just as Christine likes, it is very oriental, but the sauce…oh my word! A sweet and savoury sauce with a lovely tang, it is the perfect compliment to the chicken and even tastier with the vegetables. The chicken is succulent and tender and not at all dry and miserable as you would find in other types of sandwiches. I have really taken to this sweet onion sauce it is far better than the South West and that was delicious. I even ask the sandwich artist, "Any chance of bottling this sauce? And you don't by any chance sell the bread on its own as take way? He flashes a polite smile and says "No, I'm sorry."

Now that's finished, and it went down a treat but I am not sure if I can manage the cookie just yet. I think I will save that until I get into the cinema. Oh what the heck. I will eat it now. We have chosen Oatmeal and Raisin cookies they are large, round and soft, very much like those speciality cookies you can pick up at the cookie stores, it is moist and soft and utterly delicious.

"What are you doing?" I ask Christine as she takes my drink over to the machine and refills the tall paper cup.
"Getting a refill." she says
"You can't do that." I say
"Of course you can, you can fill it as many times as you wish as long as you are still on the premises."

There is a breakfast menu available from as little as £1.00 for a 6 inch bacon roll and served until 11 am. Hot tea, coffee and chocolate are also available along with soft drinks and bottled water, cookies, muffins and crisps.

If this had been my daughters review it would have included the whole history of how Subway came about with facts and figures and other interesting pieces of information. But that not me, however I will tell you a little information passed on to me by one of the Subway artists which is the Subway chain now has more outlets in the UK and Ireland that KFC, Burger King and Pizza Hut and aim to have 2010 outlets in the British Isles by the year 2010.

We already have 7 in the Nottingham city centre and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more open within the next couple of years. I can certainly see why Subway has become so popular. Not only is the food healthy and value for money but it is made in front of you from fresh ingredients and you can pick and choose what you want on it.

OK. Well that was my first experience of Subway and worth every penny, now please excuse me while I burp.

My boys always insist on going here and I find it all so bloody confusing ( my age probably) and then I always get it wrong and leave feeling slightly sick. Your review however - very tasty indeed. Jay x
