Subway Review Subway is a worldwide chain restaurant with nearly 31,000 stores in 89 countries; it was created by Fed De Lua in 1974, an American from Connecticut. Most of the stores are quite small, the main product is ‘subs,’ short for submarine rolls, and sandwiches.
Their main location is the United States, where they have most of their stores, however they also are based in many other countries, the main ones being Australia, the UK and Singapore. There are also subways in some unusual locations such as army bases. Where I live there are at least ten within twenty minutes, and in the main city I have counted at least four in the centre. However, it seems that the only place there isn’t one is my town, maybe that’s a good thing because I’d be spending too much money taking advantage of the special offers!
The actual restaurant is very basic, with just a waiting area, a few bar stools and the sandwich counter, however this means that prices can go down, and it never really bothers me as I always tend to eat out. It’s nice to get your sandwich and take it to a nearby park. It’s also normally very clean, which is always a plus.
As I said above, the menu’s main product is sub sandwiches, there is a great variety of these as well as the special offers. First of all you have to choose your bread, there is a choice of Italian, Italian with cheese and herbs, plain, wheat, parmesan oregano and honey oat. Then you choose your fillings, there are loads of these to choose from, including but not limited to – tuna, chicken, ham, beef, peppers, cheese, many different sauces, onions, olives, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, turkey. You can create your own sandwich or choose from one of the filling combinations on the menu, one example of these is the meatball marina that includes meatballs, cheese and sauce. You also can have your sandwich toasted at no extra cost, lovely on a cold day.
Each sub can cost anything from £2.50 to £4.00 depending on what fillings you want, the bread doesn’t cost anything extra for different types. This is quite good value considering the prices in other places and the quality and size of the sandwich. If you want to double the size of your sub and make it a foot long, this adds on about £1.50 to the price. You can get even more out of your money by using the special offers available. The offer which I think is the best is the sub of the day deal, which means that every day, one sub is £1.99 and you can have this on whatever bread you want, with whatever extra fillings you want. For example, today’s (Monday) £1.99 sub is turkey and ham deli.
The nutrition depends entirely on what sandwich, bread and filling you choose, there is an opportunity for very healthy eating here if you make the right choices. However, more often than not the nicest sandwiches end up being the least healthy, and some have been known to give you nearly all of your allowances of fat and sugar in a day (this is only the meatball marina.)
The only negative that I can really give about Subway is that the adverts sometimes don’t match up to the actual food, for example we saw an advert for a fajita style sandwich, with stir fried Mexican chicken and vegetables, however the product that I got was cold with plain vegetables, not quite what I expected.
Overall, it’s a great restaurant for lunch on the go, but watch out for those calories and false adverts!

Advantages: Deliciously fresh products, get to choose your own salad etc. Disadvantages: Staff can seem a little wooden and queues can get quite long on weekends.
