If God did indeed love all his children equally, he would have given HimIndoors 'Real Flu' instead of the manflu he (or rather, I) was made to suffer.

I first discovered Sudafed's delightful product in Tesco's. I realise I'm no Indiana Jones and unearthing this amazing invention didn't involve any dangerous snakes or giant rolling balls (though negotiating one's way through the narrow Tesco aisles can be remarkably hazardous), but I'd never seen it before and I'd love to share it's amazing properties with the entire world. It was nestled amongst the numerous cold and flu creations and was one of the only things claiming to unblock stuffy noses. It was on special offer at £1.99 at the time - a sign from God that I should buy it for the cold he'd kindly given me. So I did. It retails around £2.50 ish for the 15ml bottle and is an absolute bargain.
~~ What do I do with Sudafed Decongestant Nasal Spray ~~
Oh for the love of God, what do you think you do with it? It's a nasal spray so you put it up your nostril (after removing the plastic lid thing) and depress the spray whilst inhaling deeply (close your other nostril to increase your sniff). Quickly do the other nostril before you change your mind. My first thought was 'that's not so bad, dunno why Himindoors made such a fuss', and then the pain began. I say 'pain' in the loosest sense of the word - I've never given birth and never intend to so I can't compare it to popping a watermelon out of a place that should never have a watermelon in it in the first place, but I can match it to the pain of doing a handstand in a swimming pool with 40 litres of chlorinated water up your conk after descending too fast and having to maintain the inverted position because you have to beat your brother's time even though you've just had your 30th birthday. That's what it felt like, exactly. Immediately you'll want to blow your nose - it doesn't say that you can't, so I always do. I then sit back and think of England.
~~ How does Sudafed Decongestant Nasal Spray work? ~~
The active ingredient in the aforementioned nasal spray is xylometazoline (it says it on the side of the box, I've not whipped out my early learning chemistry set and investigated it personally, but I believe Mr McNeil who manufactures it). Xylometazoline is a decongestant that cleverly causes the blood vessels in the lining of your nasal passages and sinuses to contract and narrow thus decreasing the blood flow into these areas. In turn, this reduces the swelled, bunged-up feeling and also stems the production of mucus - how delightful. Because the nasal spray works directly on the blood vessels and causes them to contract, it minimises the amount of medication being absorbed into the rest of the body thus making side-effects uncommon which is nice to know. Due to the fact that you're spraying it directly onto the area, it works extremely fast - it took about 4 minutes to completely unblock my nose which I think is pretty amazing but then I don't get out much, probably cos I've always got a ruddy cold. Anyway, its effects lasted throughout the night (meant I finally got some sleep and awoke with fairly clear nostrils) and one squirt pretty much got me through a whole day at work.
~~ Warnings ~~
I thought I'd list some as they amused me somewhat…
"The spray is for nasal use and should not be taken by mouth" - need I say more. "Each nasal spray should be used by one person to avoid spreading infection" -you're probably using it because you've already got your lover's 'infection' but I guess ramming it up your nose immediately after it's been inserted in his, may spread a different bug that your partner never told you about but for which he's secretly been seeing a 'special' nurse. Don't take it if you're allergic to any of the ingredients. Check with your doctor to see if it's safe to combine with any other medication you may be taking - who the hell does this? Is this why the NHS is slowly crumbling before my eyes? Of course, to be on the safe side, I did ring my doctor to confirm that it was safe to take with the pill but of course she was on holiday and there were no appointments left that day (though I was tempted to take the emergency appointment, I decided not to bother). It's not suitable if you're under 12, pregnant, recently had neurosurgery or so stupid that you'd try and swallow a nasal spray.
There's not a lot else to write about Sudafed Decongestant Nasal Spray. It comes in a lovely box that you could use as a hamster tunnel if you so desired. The design on the box is average and the instructions are simple to read - not that it really matters, all you want to know is whether it works or not. It does.

As an aside, I now have pleurisy and the infection has lasted over 8 weeks incorporating Christmas which proves conclusively that there is most certainly no God (unless he's reading this, in which case - Cheers Beardy).

...Tesco, for £2.48, they had Sudafed spray. I wasn't sure but then realised Sudafed made decongestant tablets, which were always good, so why not give it a try.
The packaging is a simple white and green box, not overly appealing but when you have a cold, nothing does. Inside there is a 15ml brown bottle with a white pump and long white nozzle for popping up your nose. The nozzle has a clear cap covering it for hygiene purposes, so if you do perchance ... ...The active ingredient in Sudafed nasal spray is Xylometazoline with a concentration on 0.1%. I have never heard of this ingredient and it added to my little niggle of doubt about the effectiveness of the spray, which I had somehow made up in my mind, though I found this on the internet about Xylometazoline:

...into tescos and saw the sudafed nasal spray which was part of a special offer although the normal price is £3.49. Anyway, I used the spray and it worked so fast that i was actually quite impressed! The nights that i had used it I slept better than i had done for weeks and it lasted through till the morning so i didnt wake up with a blocked nose which was so nice!!! I suffer badly from hayfever so i will definately be using this spray in the spring ... ...The Name:

...so I tried out the Sudafed version, and found it to be very effective.
The Sudafed Decongestant Nasal Spray comes in a slim white box with blue writing, and claims "fast, long lasting relief from cold & allergy, congestion and sinus pressure." Inside there is a comprehensive instruction leaflet and a glass bottle containing the medicine, with a spray top. The spray gives a measured dose, but I found that it was too much for me. Half a spray has ... ...The active ingredient in Sudafed Nasal Spray is Xylometazoline Hydrochloride. The instructions on the side of the bottle suggest that adults and children over 12 should take two or three sprays daily. It is not suitable for children under 12. I have found that half a spray taken twice a day works for me, but this may not be the same for everyone. ...terrible. I discover SUDAFED when I was looking for hay fever tablet in Tesco. I like the fact that it is a Metered Spray, unlike the others with a squeezed bottle design which you either get nothing out of it or half a bottle in your nose. Metered Spray means that it gives you exact dose each time and no messiness. I try SUDAFED straight away as soon as I left Tesco. Amazingly, my nose was unblock in minutes and they remains unblock for the next ... ...hay fever tablets and a SUDAFED is all that I need.
SUDAFED is non-drowsy and contains Xylometazoline hydrochloride. It works in minutes to help clear stuffy noses and relieve sinus pressure caused by colds and hay-fever. ...the doctor but so far Sudafed is the only thing that works.
My nose blocks up completely both sides like its stuffed with cement. I was using Vicks which worked occasionally but it never worked at night and i would be up for hours struggling to breathe. And as i was constantly breating through my mouth - I was getting lots of chest infections.
So anyways I went into the chemist one day and they were out of Vicks and the pharmacist asked me did ... ...breathe - It was amazing. And what was even better it lasted until I went to bed that night.
The only thing is that I lose my sense of smell but i dont know whether that is the sudafed or just my nose.
Definatly a great product! ...

Advantages: do relieve aches, pains and a cough. Loosens phlegm nicely! Non-drowsy Disadvantages: Didnt clear my blocked nose, cost me a fortune, took a while to kick in
and pains but it took a while for them too kick in, they didn't even touch my blocked nose which I was annoyed about although to be fair, I haven't yet found a decongestant in tablet form that actually works! The tablets were very expensive compared to Asdas own brand, although I must admit that they did 'loosen my phlegm' quite nicely and relieve my cough which provided some welcome relief. I do not think I would buy them in future because I don't think they are worth the money, I would try and buy a cheaper version and then just carry on using my Sudafeddecongestantnasalspray. I don't think I can say that I would recommend these as although they are quite impressive at dealing with the phlegm and a cough, they don't do much more than normal paracetamol would! The only other positive thing that I can say is that they didn't make me at all ...
Quick and easy to use. Does seem to reduce severity of cold like symptoms and shortens timescale of suffering.
Expensive. Tastes revolting. Difficult to tell whether this product really does combat infection, as avoidance of coughs and colds could be put down to a sensible diet or healthy lifestyle instead. (*)
