Sudocrem isn't just used for nappy rash, even although my son is now 5 I still use Sudocrem on him, my husband and I also use it on some occasions too. It is one of those products which is suitable for use on a number of different problems and I think it is a must have item in a first aid box or bathroom cupboard wither you have children or not. I always have a tub or two of Sudocrem about the house because it is an item which we use on a regular basis, just like Calpol and paracetamol.
Nappy Rash
Sudocrem is an antiseptic healing cream which leaves a water repellent base on your skin which forms a protective barrier. I used it quite a lot when my son had a touch of nappy rash when he was a baby because it helped clear up the rash and it was mild and gentle on his skin; it also helped to soothe his sore inflamed skin. One of the main reasons Sudocrem is a great treatment for nappy rash is because it contains a number of ingredients which help soothe the burning, inflamed skin; because the Sudocrem is a water repellent cream it also layers a barrier on the skin which stops the urine or stools from coming into contact with the inflamed area preventing it from becoming more irritated or inflamed. When I was using it for nappy rash I just applied a small amount to the affected area every time I changed Joshes nappy. Some people make the mistake of applying too much of the cream to the skin resulting on the area being covered in thick white cream. The best and most effective way of applying the cream is by using small amounts at a time and rubbing it into the inflamed area in small circular motions until the cream is absorbed into the skin and leaves a translucent film on the skin. If you apply the cream and the skin stays white then you have used too much of the cream; just use a little amount at a time because it is a very thick cream and a little goes a long way. When I was using the Sudocrem for Joshes nappy rash it didn't take long for it to clear up, I actually noticed an improvement within a day or so and within a week the area was completely cleared up. Josh however got the nappy rash back again when he was at the teething stage, but that was soon cleared up with the trusted Sudocrem yet again.
Cuts and Grazes
Since Josh has come out of nappies and is more active I have been using Sudocrem an awful lot. Just like most little boys his age he is forever playing football and playing rough with his friends which in turn results in a scrape or small cut. Most of the time he just ends up with a small scrape on his knee; but for a 5 year old this can be particularly painful because the area is sore, red and inflamed. Whenever he gets a scrape I just give the area a wash with a little soapy water and dry it and then apply a thin layer of the Sudocrem on the scrape. The Sudocrem is effective at helping scrapes to heal because of the Benzyl Alcohol which stops the area becoming infected and it also provides mild pain relief to stop the area from feeling as sore and as inflamed.
If Josh gets a small cut I just wash the area in the same way I would if it were a scrape and then apply he Sudocrem. The only difference with a cut is that I like to apply a plaster if it is bleeding so as no dirt can get into the area.
Minor Burns & Sunburn
This is when Sudocrem is most commonly used my myself because I am rather clumsy in the kitchen and I'm forever burning my fingers when I'm removing something from the oven. Most of the time it is just small burns which I get although I did burn my arm rather badly with the iron once before which was really painful. Whenever I get a burn I run it under the cold water for a few minutes and then dry the area and apply a thin layer of Sudocrem which helps reduce the burning pain a little. Again the Benzyl Alcohol relieves the pain a little because of its mild aesthetic properties.I never get sunburn because I'm clever and apply sun protection; however my husband never applies any form of sun cream protection to his skin and has had really bad sunburn quite a few times. His skin has been very red and blistered quite a few times. Applying a thin layer of Sudocrem to the red inflamed area eases the hot stinging sensation on the skin; again the Benzyl Alcohol reduces the pain whilst the emollient properties help to maintain the condition of the skin keeping it soft and supple. Whenever my husband has had sunburn he says that the pain and irritation only lasts for a day or so if we use Sudocrem on the area. If we didn't use the Sudocrem on the area he would probably be in pain for a longer amount of time.
Other Uses Sudocrem can also be used to treat Incontinence dermatitis and Pressure/bed Sores although I have never had to use it on any member of my family for these purposes so I cant comment on how effective it is at treating these conditions. Although judging by the results from nappy rash, cuts, scrapes and burns etc I think that it would be really effective at treating these conditions.
Active Ingredients
* hypoallergenic lanolin, to help provide emollient properties. An Emollient helps to soothe and moisturise the skin.* zinc oxide ~ which is an astringent which reduces the loss of tissue fluid. An Astringent helps the skin to contract which stops any moisture from being lost from the skins pores.
*benzyl benzoate and benzyl cinnamate ~ which help the skin to heal
* Benzyl Alcohol ~ which acts as a mild local anaesthetic which helps to reduce the pain and irritation on the skin. Benzyl Alcohol also acts as a disinfectant/antibacterial ingredient which protects the skin from bacteria.
Price and Availability
Sudocrem can be bought from a number of different places, I usually just purchase it from our local pharmacist. I have also purchased it from Tesco's on the odd occasion although it is slightly more expensive to buy from Tesco's than the pharmacists. Sudocrem can also be bought in a number of different sized grey tubs, the sizes available are ~ 400g, 250g, 125g and 60g. You can also purchase it in a small 30g tube although I have never seen this available for sale in any pharmacies or supermarkets.
Most chemists, supermarkets and department stores sell Sudocrem and I'm sure you could also get it one prescription from your doctor too. I usually buy a 250g tub and it costs approximately £3.15 which isn't really expensive considering it lasts for an awful long time. Each tub of Sudocrem has a shelf life of five years so once your tub is opened you can continue to use it until it goes out of date providing you keep the lid closed tight.

...always thought if Calpol and/or Sudocrem didn't solve the problem, then, and only then was it time to go to the doctor.
**The Packaging**
The tub in my house at the moment is a 125g grey plastic tub with a lift off lid, which when you first buy it has one of those sealing plastic pieces all round the top of the tub, which you have to pull off.
There is a red and white label with the Sudocrem logo and full instructions for use and list of ingredients.

Sudocrem is sold in most supermarkets and chemists; very widely available.
For 125g pot, it costs around the £1.20 marks, and for the 250g pot, about £3.70, but as with anything, some shops sell it cheaper than others.
It is, however, good value at this price, because a smaller tub will last about 6 months if using it for incidentals, obviously less if there are lots of bottoms to soothe!

Sudocrem is a thick white barrier cream which some people use at every nappy change, but we only use if they is trouble down below.
