This really is a must have for anyone's medical box (or drawer in my case!!) A lot of people associate it with nappy rash but it has a wide variety of uses which I will list below. Not a sufferer of nappy rash myself, toilet-trained many years ago, I use this for oven burns (which I get quite often due to my clumsiness) and have on the rare occasion used it for sunburn.

~ Price ~

Sudocrem comes in different size tubs and a tube. I have listed the prices of a couple of these, Asda being a tad cheaper than Boots. I bought mine from the latter as this is the most convenient shop for me to pop in to for 5 minutes.

125g tub ~ Asda £2.10 Boots £2.17
250g tub ~ Asda £3.67 Boots £3.99

~ Packaging ~

My 125g tub is a thick grey plastic tub. When new this has a sealant type ring, almost like a bracelet around it so that you can see that it hasn't been tampered with. Once this is stripped off, the lid comes off easily.

I prefer tubs to tubes as you are assured of getting every last bit of the cream as you scoop your finger around the tub whereas cream does allow for some element of waste.

There is a very plain white label around it with Sudocrem on a red background and Antiseptic Healing Cream written in red on it.

Very plain, basic packaging................no frills!

~ What is sudocrem? ~

Developed more than 70 years ago, Sudocrem is the market leader in treatment of certain skin conditions.

Sudocrem has a water-repellent base which forms a protective layer, therefore helps to stop any irritants coming in to contact with the skin.

The emollient effect can help sore, inflamed skin whilst leaving the skin soft.

It's an astringent and contains a weak local anaesthetic which acts to ease pain and irritation. It is also a disinfectant and antibacterial cream.

That's the medical advantages of this wonder cream over with!

~ Uses ~

This antiseptic cream has a wide number of uses which I shall list below, apologies to those of you who don't want to know but someone may suffer from a particular ailment which sudocrem deals with:
  • Probably most commonly used for nappy rash as it soothes and heals
  • Treats pressure sores / bed sores
  • Unpleasant........but incontinence dermatitis.
  • General skin or sweat rashes, i.e those at the backs of the knees and groin area.
  • Sunburn (which I have used it for). I don't burn easily at all, being from an Italian background. I always apply sun protection but have on the odd ocassion forgotten my Dr Spock ears and have burnt them a couple of times, very painful but Sudocrem has worked. The anaesthetic properties of Sudocrem help to soothe the soreness, whilst maintaining the moisture of the skin leaving it soft and supple.
  • Minor burns ~ as stated earlier, I'm always getting either iron or oven burns............not a careful person. These superficial burns can be very painful and this cream alleviates the pain.
  • Cuts and grazes. Once the area has been cleaned, Sudocrem's ingredients help reduce the risk of infection
  • Skin conditions such as eczema.

~ My experience ~

For as long as I can remember my good old Mum has had Sudocrem at the ready and when I moved out of home many, many moons ago I got some of this magic cream. It really is a must have for any household, not only for those with little ones in the house.

It has an extremely pleasant smell to it, apparantly a lavender perfume according to the ingredients.
As I generally state when describing the smell of things, I wish that ciao had a scratch and sniff option as smells are so subjective. Some may assume that due to it's local anaesthetic attributes this may smell too clinical and almost like hospital wards (hope you know what I mean by that!) but it really doesn't. It has a very clean, fresh smell to it.

Sudocrem is an extremely thick, white cream. I used to apply too much which meant that if I applied it on an evening I woke up with the white cream left on my sunburn or burn the following morning and since it is water resistant it's not at all easy to wash off.

The trick is that you use a very, very small amount............a little really does go a long way with this stuff. A thin layer should be applied in circular movements until it has disappeared, leaving a translucent film over the skin. If the affected area stays white after application that is a sign that too much has been applied and it makes any clothing feel sticky and could mark it with a grease-like stain.

So even with a little bit of this it really does relieve any soreness or irritation to the skin. I haven't used it for everything but can, hand on heart verify that it calms down nappy rash (not mine, but my nieces and nephews!), really cools down any soreness and itching that sunburn may create and helps the healing process of minor burns, which I unfortunately often get.

The lifetime of the cream is exceptionally long...........I replaced my tub in February 2006 and this tub will last me until October 2010 as stated on the label. My previous tub lasted my household for approx four years before it ran out, which works out at approx 54p a year, not bad for all of the pain it can ease!!

Just take care not to get it in to your eyes, nose or mouth and if localised irritation occurs stop using it and consult your GP.
