This is quite possibly one of the most useful products to have in the house for those little emergencies, and I don't think there has been a time in the last 16 years when I haven't had at least a very small tub of it readily available.
When the children were little, I always thought if Calpol and/or Sudocrem didn't solve the problem, then, and only then was it time to go to the doctor.
**The Packaging**
The tub in my house at the moment is a 125g grey plastic tub with a lift off lid, which when you first buy it has one of those sealing plastic pieces all round the top of the tub, which you have to pull off.
There is a red and white label with the Sudocrem logo and full instructions for use and list of ingredients.
**The Cream**
Very very thick white cream, and when the tub is first opened, it's almost a shame to put your finger in as it looks so clean and perfect.
The smell is quite chalky/ lavender, but it does contain lavender (soothing properties) so that would be right. However, there
are no lingering smells once the cream is applied. I say not lingering, but on first applying the cream, there is a "baby" smell.
**What can you use it for?**
The instructions suggest that you use this product for nappy rash, eczema, bed sores, sunburn, minor burns, surface wounds, acne and chilblains
Quite simple…stick your finger into the pot of cream and apply a thin layer to the infected area, but remember not to be over zealous or you will find yourself rubbing for ages to get the cream rubbed in, as it's so thick.
**Warnings**
Having read warnings on some products, these are not overly severe, most of them being common sense warnings and advise.
Keep the product out of the reach of children. This is a good idea, because once the seal is taken from round the lid and the tub is open, it is really easy to reopen (no child safety mechanism)
For external use only; if the cream is swallowed, seek medical advice
Occasionally localized irritation may occur. In these circumstances, discontinue use and seek medical advise
**Ingredients**
Amongst other things, it does produce lanolin which I assume gives it the slightly chalky effect.

**Price and Availability**
Sudocrem is sold in most supermarkets and chemists; very widely available.
For 125g pot, it costs around the £1.20 marks, and for the 250g pot, about £3.70, but as with anything, some shops sell it cheaper than others.
It is, however, good value at this price, because a smaller tub will last about 6 months if using it for incidentals, obviously less if there are lots of bottoms to soothe!
**Does it work?**
This has been part of (just about the only part of) my medical box for years, and since it has been going for so long, I would imagine a lot of people keep it in case of emergencies.
It's brilliant for any kind of nappy rash or irritation, due to the fact that it has a water repellent base, ensuring that baby is not going to have any liquid products close to bottom. It is obviously a very mild product, since there are no indications that it cannot be used on children under a certain age. Obviously, this would have to be the case since it can be used for nappy rash. I have used it for just this thing (on the babies) and it really does seem to soothe any soreness. Since they were too young to talk, I can only make this assumption, but redness soon disappeared. Apart from anything else, mum feels better for applying the cream because the very coolness of it makes it feel soothing.
The tub of Sudocrem states that it can be used for eczema, but I assume this is for mild cases only. A friend of mine has a little girl with quite severe eczema and apparently, whilst the product causes no adverse reactions, it does not clear eczema. However, I would imagine that the very fact that it is so soothing would mean that less severe outbreaks could at least be soothed if not cleared.
If ever anyone manages to burn themselves- ovens and straightners are particular culprits, the cream can be applied easily and really takes the sting away; again, mainly because of the cooling effect. It does have antiseptic properties, so I know that it is at least keeping the burn clean and uninfected.
We also use it for cuts and grazes, and it's a real plus when you can rub the "magic cream" onto a graze and know it's not going to sting; grazes do hurt and I think it ads insult to injury if, having hurt themselves, a little person has to be subjected to "stingy cream". So, triple plus…it is non sting, cooling, and you know it is keeping the area clean.
Then there is its ability to soothe spots. Having got through the nappy stage, we moved on to the "I've got A SPOT!!" stage. For the odd spot it seems to have the same effect as for cuts and grazes, soothes and heals, and keeps skin moisturized. The only down side is that you will NOT be able to make a teenager use it before they go in public because of the smell.
Another good use is as a moisturizer…rub it into your hands before you put on rubber gloves. I believe I sound more strange by the sentence. Take off rubber gloves and hey presto, soft, non rubber smelling hands. I would suggest that it isn't used as a general hand cream because it is a bit too thick, and quite difficult to rub in properly, so any excess tends to lurk around any lines on your hands, and that chalky look is so NOT a good look.
So, for a good "all rounder", it is a must for the medical box, and over the years, has taken on quite magical properties in our house. Strangely enough, though, it's only little lady who now believes it to be magic!
Thanks for reading…just going to get those rubber gloves!!
