All the reviews for this concentrate on the eczema/nappy rash/sunburn side of things, so I thought I'd clue you in on one of its little-known uses... spots.
I first discovered this when I was 15. Like any 15 year old, I was cursed with oily skin and spots. I'd tried clearasil and all the rest and then I asked one of my friends, who had an annoyingly perfect complexion, what her secret was. She ummed for a bit, and then told me all about Sudocrem, and I ran out and got some. Simple as. And it worked. Hurrah!
I haven't had half as many spots since I started using it. I rarely get them at all now, but I'm sure that's more to do with the fact that I'm getting older and eating more healthily. As usual, sod's law dictates that I get one spot per social occasion, but as long as I've got some of this stuff to hand, it's all good.
General Information
====
It comes in 4 sizes, plus a 30g tube to take on holidays or outings. I've only seen two sizes of tub though, in supermarkets, chemists and the like - 125g and 250g - Prices vary on where you buy it, but I find Wilkinsons is usually the cheapest. This is where Tesco's
Price Check comes in handy.
I bought the smaller size first, and that lasted me about a year. Now I've got the larger, 250g pot and I'm still only halfway through! They come with long use-by dates though. This one says July 2008 so you really do get your money's worth.
The website is www.sudocrem.co.uk, and they have a lot of information for its use on nappy rash. It can also be use for eczema, pressure sores, sunburn, cuts and grazes, acne and chillblains.
The website says this is why: "Gentle but effective, it won't sting on application. Sudocrem's formulation helps to reduce the risk of infection and contains a mild local anaesthetic to soothe the pain. In addition, it helps a wound to heal and forms a protective barrier over the vulnerable area."
I think it's one of those First Aid Kit items. If you can find the 30g tube, it looks like a better alternative to Savlon for family outings. I remember my mom always used to carry a tube of Savlon and a box of plasters wherever we went because I was always falling over. I attribute it to having such small feet - less surface area to balance on =P This looks like it could handle pretty much anything you throw at it.
Comparison with other products (excuse my conspiratorial rant)
=
For nappy rash, Sudocrem has got the Mother and Baby Award for Excellence, so it's pretty well established in that field. However, it still remains a secret for general skincare.
I've discovered, over the years, that anything that tells you it's going to get rid of your spots is lying. It's just business sense really, you try to get as many people to buy your product as possible. This is why men's razors are so much sharper - if men find they have to shave too frequently, most will just give up and grow beards en mass (profits lost). Women's razors make it so your legs are smooth for an hour, and then you have to go Buy More (profits gained). Call me a cynic, but I'm quite happy using Mach 3 every few days than Venus every hour.
Anyway. That's why clearasil doesn't actually do anything. It's a product designed to target teenage girls who will continue buying it just in case if they stop, their skin will get worse. If their spots went away, they wouldn't have to buy so much. I used it religiously until I discovered Sudocrem, and discovered that my skin was actually better without it. The swines.
Sudocrem is a product designed, I assume, for mothers who want the best for their children - if it doesn't do what they want it to, they'd buy something else. So they make it work. Sales.
Luckily for us with rubbish skin, it works on blemishes too. Hurrah! It's not the most stylish-looking pot, in its grey plastic, but you're hardly going to display on your dressing table something that proudly declares: "ANTISEPTICHEALING CREAM, for Napkin Rash, Eczema and Bed Sores." in big red letters - this is one to hide in a drawer with the fake tan (yes, just back from Vienna, actually - yes, my skin is naturally this radiant, thankyou)
Its top just lifts off - no fiddly screw lid. The only irritating thing is that it'd probably be more helpful in a tube - trying to get it out of the tub, it gets all under your nails and it's hardly hygenic to keep dipping your hands into it. I wouldn't be using it on my face, if it had just been used on a baby's bum. o.0
Other Uses
I'm afraid I can't offer any personal views on its other uses. I've never had eczema, chillblains, bed sores or babies. I tried it on sunburn a few weeks ago but since it was my first case of sunburn, I'm not sure what was supposed to happen anyway. It did seem less painful than everyone else made out theirs was though, and it never peeled, just faded to a warm brown that still clashes horribly with the gothly pale rest of me... I've read some of the other reviews for this and they're quite good, so I shall point you towards them for info on its other uses.
In Use (on face)
It smells ok. It smells of babies, lavender and hospital waiting room. If you use it on spots, it's best to blob some on your blemishes and leave it on overnight. It gets all over your pillows though, so make sure it's an old white pillowcase because it can stain dark colours and look quite dodgy. In the morning, you have to wipe it off with tissue or cotton wool before you can wash your face. Because it is meant to form a barrier from bacteria, it's waterproof when you try to wash it off. The rest will come off with cleanser or facewash though, so it's ok. You just have to make sure you've got it all. I once went to school with a smear of it on my chin! Luckily it just looked like toothpaste so it wasn't too embarassing but you do have to inspect your face before you rush out in the morning. Also, you should tie your hair back unless you're going to wash it in the morning, because Sudocrem doesn't really dry and sticks to anything that comes near it.
After that, it should make your spots go away within a day or so. Overnight, it'll usually shrink one that's brewing, but it'll take a bit longer for a big one to completely disappear. It's brilliant if you get the occasional spot, and have "regular" skin, because it means you don't have to worry about one cropping up the week of an important date - it'll usually get rid of it in time.
It doesn't dry out your skin or make it more oily, that I've noticed. It doesn't actually seem to do anything to your skin other than disappear your spots away! It's gentle enough for babies, so I suppose it should be ok for sensitive skin, but don't sue me if you find out otherwise.
I'm not sure about full-blown acne. I'd reccomend trying it, at least. It's quite cheap and it works with so many other things that it's useful to have around the house anyway, and it lasts for so long that it's bound to come in useful at some point or another.
So there you go. My secret to a clearer complexion. Shh!
