Excellent additional external HDD
Review of Freecom Hard Drive Hard drive 400 GB by bazone8

Advantages: Additional capacity - worked out of the box
Disadvantages: None

...I totally agree with first reviewer. Worked out of the box. I partitioned the 400 GB into two drives using Partition Magic 8 (which had previously baulked at a 160 GB internal HDD) and am using one for storage of digital images (duplicates to CD/DVD backups). Mine, even after three hours use, did not get hot - rather a nice warm value. It works very quietly and I can fully recommend this make and model as exceptionally good and extremely good value for money. When I think back to the 40 MB disc I used for years (Drivespaced, too) I cannot but think what fantastic value for money this is. As a supplement to my internal 2 X 120 GB HDDs, it will provide an additional capacity for my growing storage of high quality digital images (I am now a retired PRO Photographer and teacher of, says he blushingly, high international reputation)... 160gb SATA HDD
Review of Maxtor DiamondMax 10 160 GB by njt6

Advantages: fair amount of storage space for price
Disadvantages: Can be a bit noisey at times

...with 80gb Hard drives being the norm in most entry level pc's the price of the 160gb hdd is dropping. If you are looking for a reliable Hard drive for storage of MP3s, video or even gameing then the 160gb will be up your street. The space on the Drive makes it ideal of an entry level "pvr" system. I am currently using one of these as a secondary drive. I have so far managed to record 8hrs of tv to it at decent quality and still have plenty of space left..... The drive Is sata 150 with 8mb cache and 7200rpm spindle. This enables faster reading and writing to the drive. You will need to have a System Board that supports sata 150 or purchase a sata pci card if you want to run the drive in an older machine. You can buy a convetor which will enable you to plug the drive into a normal 40 pin IDE port. Ther is a warning to this though... Read review

Between DLT and SDLT - 80 - 160GB Backup
Review of Quantum DLT VS160 80 GB 160 GB by davidbarnes82

Advantages: Fast, reliable, Good Price
Disadvantages: No SCSI cable included, Not Great instructions

...I bought this for our office server which before-hand was running a DDS5 tape drive. I have to say the DDS5 backup system we had was excellent and never caused me any problems. We got to a point where we needed two tapes to do a backup, and considering we keep backups for up to a month, thats a hell of a lot more tapes we would have to buy. After a lot of research and learning about DLT and SDLT, we discovered the V160. DLT allows backups to 40GB (80GB Compressed) and SDLT is alot more (i forget the figures). DLT would not have been enough and SDLT is a hell of a lot more expensive. Quantums V160 is right in the middle of the two and each tape can store up to 160GB data if compressed. We managed to get the drive for around £700 and then bought a number of tapes. It was delivered direct from Quantum within a week. The one problem I... Read review
