Manufacturer's product description
The state-of-the-art UltraSPARC II processor is the second generation in the UltraSPARC s-series microprocessor family. A complete implementation of the SPARC V9 architecture, the UltraSPARC II processor is binary compatible with all previous versions of SPARC processors, resulting in an increased return on your investment. Designed for scalability from mainstream workstations at the low end up to supercomputing servers at the high end, the UltraSPARC II processor delivers high performance and reliability. Meeting and exceeding the demands of today's compute-intensive, network-centric, multimedia-rich applications, the UltraSPARC II processor implements innovative technologies that help lower the end user's total cost of ownership. The UltraSPARC II processor micro architecture is designed to provide up to 4-way glue less multiprocessing support and supports up to 64-way systems. The processor supports multiple L2 cache speeds and sizes to enable high-performance multiprocessing systems. A highly scalable, high-performance system interconnect ensures a bottleneck-free computing environment resulting in high memory bandwidth. VIS (Visual Instruction Set) multimedia extensions boost the performance of graphics-intensive multimedia applications, and thus reduce overall system costs by eliminating the need for a special-purpose media processor. And the UltraSPARC II delivers superior raw compute performance by using the most innovative RISC microprocessor architecture and state-of-the-art process technology. The UltraSPARC II processor not only helps the system designer by implementing industry-standard testing and instrumentation interfaces, it also uses Error Checking and Correction (ECC) and parity to increase system reliability. With high performance, high scalability, and high reliability, the UltraSPARC II is the processor of choice for today's workstations and servers.
Advantages: Cheap entry level Sun SPARC from 1997 Disadvantages: Build quality is PC like, and low cache processors
...The SunUltraSPARC 5 workstation was brought out in 1997, and was priced so you could have one on your desk for approx 1000 US Dollars. They stopped shipping to customers in May 2002. These days, it is not a fast machine, but still they are perfectly useable for many workstation and server tasks.
Processor and Memory -
This model has an UltraSPARC IIi processor which is, of course, 64 bit and is clocked at 360 MHz. You can have 1GB of memory in the workstation, installed as up to 4 DIMMS, which must be installed in pairs. "Normal" PC memory will not work in these workstations. The 260MHz model only has 256kB cache (same with the 270MHzprocessor) For better performance, you need the 2MB cache version on the 333 or 400MHz versions.
Storage -
There is one HDD bay in the machine, although if you remove the floppy drive, you...

Advantages: Cheap, Good power:cost ratio Disadvantages: Not HighEnd
...When you're evaluating this product please don't forget that it's probably only costing you £15/£20 pounds and it IS a budget processor.
There is speed to be had in this processor but it's NOT 333 Mhz of speed. It's a cleverly multiplied low-end processor which has a very high effective speed.
The best situation for this chip is where you could normally only fit a P166 Mhz chip. Older machines.
Once excellent place for this chip is in network servers. Laugh all you will but ....
You can pick-up a rack-mountable Compaq Proliant server which support 4 processors (P166) for about £250. Buy four of these and fit them and you've got an awesome little server for under £350. Add extra memory and a good HD system and you've got a VERY capabale multi-function server capable of sevicing over 1000 users on a LAN. I know this as I...

Advantages: reliable, very upgradable, fast and very over-clockable. Disadvantages: no HT support, only USB 1.1, did anybody get built in LAN?
...After upgrading from a trusty P3-500 to an AMD Athlon 1.4GHz I found pressing the reset button every few minutes to be a real pain so I went back to Intel. I wanted a reliable system that was fast, clockable and futureproof. It also had to be rock solid and stable as well. Looking around everyone was saying good things about the TH7-II so I decided to buy one and give it a go.
This board didn't come cheap. When you add Rambus RIMMS and a P4 processor in as well it was pretty expensive. But I was so annoyed with how unreliable my previous system was I bought it anyway and sold the Athlon and VIA based motherboard to a mate for £50.
This board is Abit's i850 chipset solution featuring 5 PCI slots, 1 AGP, 4 slots for Rambus rimms and 2 Highpoint HPT370 IDE channels in addition to the 2 standard IDE channels. The Highpoint has its own...
