Sun developed the UltraSPARC IIi 650 MHz processor to meet the needs of embedded 64-bit computing and low-end workstation systems. This remarkable chip delivers impressive computing throughput in a highly integrated package, with efficient power consumption to enable compact, low-cost system designs. The UltraSPARC IIi 650 MHz processor is based on the same 64-bit SPARC V9 architecture found in many Internet and enterprise servers. The UltraSPARC IIi 650 MHz processor provides a low-end entry to Sun's exceptional performance, reliability, and scalability, making it ideal for demanding datacom, Internet, telecom, and network environments.
Advantages: Cheap entry level Sun SPARC from 1997 Disadvantages: Build quality is PC like, and low cache processors
...The SunUltraSPARC 5 workstation was brought out in 1997, and was priced so you could have one on your desk for approx 1000 US Dollars. They stopped shipping to customers in May 2002. These days, it is not a fast machine, but still they are perfectly useable for many workstation and server tasks.
Processor and Memory -
This model has an UltraSPARCIIiprocessor which is, of course, 64 bit and is clocked at 360 MHz. You can have 1GB of memory in the workstation, installed as up to 4 DIMMS, which must be installed in pairs. "Normal" PC memory will not work in these workstations. The 260MHz model only has 256kB cache (same with the 270MHzprocessor) For better performance, you need the 2MB cache version on the 333 or 400MHz versions.
Storage -
There is one HDD bay in the machine, although if you remove the floppy drive, you...

Advantages: Reliable Disadvantages: Cost? ( see opinion )
...tag given to Intel processors is somewhat unjustified.
For example my PIII 600 in May 2000 - cost £240 running at 800mhz. An 800mhz PIII at the time was approx £500, enough to get a top of the range graphics card and change. Admittedly there are some "hidden" costs to the overclocked version e.g. a good quality mainboard, roomy case for good airflow, and a better heatsink, but I think that these are good practice in building any computer, the other minus is there's no guarantee that the processor you get will sucessfuly overclock.
I would however still recommend the Pentium III, it's a good, fast and stable processor even when pushed towards it's limits....

Advantages: good and cheap processor for using simple apps Disadvantages: too slow in dificult graphics operations
...The AMD-K6-IIIprocessor with 3DNow! technology incorporates AMD's TriLevel Cache design to enable leading-edge performance for today's consumer PC enthusiasts and business power users. The innovative TriLevel Cache design maximizes the overall system performance of AMD-K6-IIIprocessor-based desktop PCs by delivering one of the industry's largest maximum combined system caches. This larger total cache results in higher system performance. The TriLevel Cache design includes a full-speed 64KB Level 1 (L1) cache (a standard feature of the AMD-K6 processor family), an internal full-speed backside 256KB Level 2 (L2) cache, and a 100-MHz frontside bus to an optional external Level 3 (L3) cache on the Super7™ motherboard. With a total of 320KB of combined L1 and L2 cache, the AMD-K6-IIIprocessor has more internal cache memory than any...
