This makes a change doesn’t it? It seems like ages since I have written about a PRODUCT and a non-alcoholic one at that! Though we are still talking liquid and drink here!

Sunny Delight has been around for a few years in the UK with two flavours initially, based on orange flavour, then a “light” version, strawberry and Caribbean. Now they have introduced four more distinctive flavours and Blackcurrant Blast happens to be my favourite. It’s weird this Sunny Delight phenomenon – I mean I love it but everyone I seem to know, friends, family and fellow Ciaoers I have spoken with, seem to hate ... ...so just who is buying and drinking the damned stuff besides me??!! I’m guessing it’s the “younger generation” and maybe it appeals to the little kid in me and that’s why I like it?
I have been warned against its “evils” by a fellow member of Ciao due to its sugar and additives content but nevertheless I haven’t been able to break the habit yet. Along with my coffee, fags and wine this is another part of my rather unhealthy liquid intake ... more

Sunny Delight has been around for a few years in the UK with two flavours initially, based on orange flavour, then a “light” version, strawberry and Caribbean. Now they have introduced four more distinctive flavours and Blackcurrant Blast happens to be my favourite. It’s weird this Sunny Delight phenomenon – I mean I love it but everyone I seem to know, friends, family and fellow Ciaoers I have spoken with, seem to hate it! Yet it sells well and seems popular so just who is buying and drinking the damned stuff besides me??!! I’m guessing it’s the “younger generation” and maybe it appeals to the little kid in me and that’s why I like it?
I have been warned against its “evils” by a fellow member of Ciao due to its sugar and additives content but nevertheless I haven’t been able to break the habit yet. Along with my coffee, fags and wine this is another part of my rather unhealthy liquid intake at the moment. I’m trying to train myself on to lemon tea but it’s not working.
Anyway, enough of the preamble, on to the subject in hand, “Sunny Delight Blackcurrant Blast”. This is billed as having “a rich blackcurrant flavour creating an explosive taste experience” – maybe they have gone a little over the top with the “explosive” bit! However I have to agree it has a lovely rich flavour with a nice smoothness and is sooooo drinkable! It contains 15% fruit juice (apple and blackcurrant) along with citric acid, vegetable oil, fruit extracts, sweeteners, thickeners and handful of other incomprehensible additives. In its defence it contains no added sugar and is also fortified with vitamins B1, B6 and C so it is, ummm, a little bit healthy!
I managed to buy this on special offer at Tesco at a price of £1.11 plus buy a second bottle for half price so it worked out at very good value. It has to be said that at smaller shops, like my local Alldays, it sells for a horrendous £1.49 so you may need to shop around if it tempts you. It comes in a square plastic 1.5 litre bottle although there are lunchbox sized bottles available though these are comparatively expensive at about 60-70p each. It has a very bright, colourful modern label so is easy to spot on the shelves.
Best serve chilled to bring out the flavours I love drinking this as an alternative to hot drinks or with my meals and it appeals to my (very) sweet tooth, even I find it a little sickly sometimes. So if you have a small child inside you that hankers after a sweet, brightly coloured, strong flavoured soft drink then this should do it!
Advantages: Kids love it; Tasty; Fruity; Widely Available Disadvantages: Bad for you - still; High in Colourants.
These days Sunny Delight seems to have a rather bad reputation with parents and dietary specialists. That is because originally, when Sunny Delight was first launched (with only 3 flavours available) it was packed full of sugars and other bad ingredients. Kids loved it though, which is one of the reasons why it is still around, and the brand managed to stay profitable despite all the bad publicity it received in the press.
I was even more aware ... ...free samples of the new Sunny Delight Blackcurrant Blast flavour drink. I went up to the stall and asked what the lady was sampling.
"I know it is the dreaded Sunny Delight..." The lady said to me in a cheerful manner - the complete opposite of what I was expecting her to say - I thought they were meant to be trying to sell the stuff, not putting everyone off!
"...But they have started to reduce the amount of sugar in it now and they actually taste ...

Advantages: Ermmm, it quenched my thirst - just Disadvantages: Looks radioactive, tastes odd and is unhealthy
drop it all over me. However, a new 'innovation' just introduced are sports caps, although I believe they are flawed because they never close properly.
So what did I like about the new flavour. Well, it did quench my thirst, but other than that, it was disappointing.
With loads of E-Numbers, shovels of sugar and excess of colouring, coupled with just an overall percentage of 5% of fruit juice, proves how flawed SunnyDelight are.
Along with the equally unappealing looking BlackcurrentBlast, Tropical Tornado and Orange flavour, SunnyDelight are trying very hard to get out money - well sorry, they dont get my vote at all!

Hold on tight folks..here we go with another drink opinion! Ummm, sorry, non- alcoholic again ? been sometime since I?ve done one of my trademark wine opinions, hasn?t it? I?ll endeavour to put that right in the near future but for this time it?s back to the soft drinks.
I recently reviewed one of SunnyDelight?s four new flavours ? BlackcurrantBlast ? well this time it?s their Apple and Kiwi Kick which is under analysis on the shrinks? couch. ?Just how has being this lurid, repellent colour effected your life?? ?Well, doc, I get compared to snot regularly?? No, wait let?s go for the facts.
This flavoursome delight comes in the familiar SunnyDelight packaging which consists of a chunky clear plastic 1.5 litre bottle with colour co-ordinated lid and label to match the eye-catching colour of the liquid within ? in this case ...
