One of the first games i bought for my SNES. Also one which sold very quickly when i was selling my games [am now kicking myself for doing that]. Even now i still get cravings for the two-player battle mode. i can still remember the satisfaction of someone slipping up on your 'wall' of banana skins & getting smacked by homing koopa shell. Surprisingly for such an old game there is huge room for strategy & cunning.

Even the normal racing mode is great fun with another player. This simply adds to the excitement as you can compete with each other or help each other (yeah right!). Though depending on the difficulty you may have to make an alliance so you both qualify for the next round.

Variety

The races are themed and there are a variety of tracks for each theme, eg the beach races set in water or the tough 'Bowser' tracks where there are very sharp corners [yet also the best for ambushes with nana skins & on those straights fire those shells (homing & normal) & whack them to kingdom come!].

Characters

One of the best ideas of the game. Each character has unique abilities, for example Princess has excellent acceleration but is a real flid so keep her away from the edges of those tracks where you can get pushed off - nevertheless she gets pushed about alot. Characters like Bowser & Donkey Kong are sooo slow at accelerating but fast when they get started [excelletn for those straights] - their main plus is that they are such hefters everyone gets smacked into next week [one of my fave tactics] if they get in their way - that is if they don't get plain smacked of the track & drop off, having to be fished back up, wasting time...

Tactics

But even the weak characters are not helpless since each lap you can pick up goodies like weapons, boosters & feathers [they allow you to jump up & avoid attacks & if you are really skilful u can time it so when u jump the character in front of you get hits by the shell meant for u]!

If your are doing really badly because of the other player in the normal mode, you can simply sabotage his chances (very satisfying for wiping that grin off his face) by laying banana skins all over the place or at places where you know he frequents. Or you can simply waste most of the handy item icons so he can't get any. Then you canpick up a red homing sheel & lay in wait & blast him when he comes past. If you are a stronger character than the other human player you can simply smack him off the track or keep blocking his progress - especially if you are a hefter - though they weill ultimately eescape since the hefters are so slow.

If you are really merciless you can start massacring the character you lap, making them finish even slower & possibly making them lapped by others and / or several times. This is the ultimate humiliation & if the other player is human they will most likely leave or punch you! lol

Comparison

The battle mode made it one of the best party games ever along with Bomberman. Although Rock & Roll Racing is one of my fave games because of the sheer violence of it - missiles not shells - this has the added bonus of a battle mode. [Yes you may have realised I'm a bit of a psycho / sadcase when it comes to these kinda games! In fact i don't like racing games which don't have this sabotage / violent element to it... lol]

Where to buy

U may think this is nigh impossible to get since the Snes is so old. But in fact this is real easy to get holdo ff from online auctions like yahoo & ebay.com (.co.uk). Since it was such a popular game then, there are still plenty of copies floating about. The demand these days is still high but prices are reasonable. Expect to pay about £10 for it in the UK.

Overall

No question about it - you must buy this now!!!!

Although very much outdated now by newer games consoles providing better graphics and game play, this was and in my opinion still is a great game.
