I’d been feeling a bit queasy for a couple of days and had a pretty good idea why even though my monthly visitor was due for a, well a couple more days. I was also feeling a bit impatient as I’d only had a miscarriage three months ago, I wanted to know whether I was pregnant or not as soon as possible. So I decided to take a walk into town and purchase a test that would be able to give me a result before the day my period was due to start.
I found the Superdrug Early Pregnancy Test in, of all places, Superdrug, at a pretty reasonable price. The were actually on offer and two twin packs cost me £7.99, so that works out at just under £2 a test, which is comparable to the very cheapest tests available. As soon as I had bought them I rushed home and got ready to test my pee, told you I was impatient didn’t I? The actual box containing the tests was wrapped in cellophane and I found this a little difficult to open, especially as I actually needed to pee by now. Each test was separately wrapped in it’s own easy to open pouch and the enclosed instructions were comprehensive and easy to follow.
Said instructions told me that these tests can be used up to four days before my period was due and could be used at any time of the day, although more accurate results would be obtained if used first thing in the morning. This is because as with all pregnancy tests it works by testing for levels of a hormone called HCG and quite simply there’ll be more of this in your urine first thing because it’s had all night to collect in your bladder. The tests themselves look quite smart, almost like a pen and the urine strip has a cover, it’s far more substantial than some that I’ve used and doesn’t look too bad as a keepsake.
The instructions say that the lid should be removed and then the absorbent pad should be held in a stream of urine for 10 seconds after which the lid is replaced and then all that needs to be done is to wait. Well I didn’t quite follow these instructions, I didn’t fancy trying to hold the test while weeing, and as the instructions say that I shouldn’t get urine on the test window, I decided to use a slightly different method. I filled a clean container with urine and then after washing my hands I held the absorbent tip in the urine for ten seconds. Well actually I just slowly counted to ten but it must of been about ten seconds, give or take. After putting the lid back on I placed the test on the side of the bath and waited for it to do it’s magic.
The instructions stated that the results should be visible within 3 minutes, but I got a result much quicker than that. Within 20 seconds or so a pink tide began to work it’s way through the two windows starting with the test window and then the control. As it worked it’s way along it left a very definite result. A pink line in both windows means your pregnant, while a single line in the control window means you’re not while any other combination means the test not valid. I had the result I was looking for within a minute, two very clear lines so I knew I am indeed expecting the patter of little feet. I have also used the same test in previous months (well not the same one it was a different test but the same type) and had a clear but negative result.
I find that this is a very effective pregnancy test, it gives easy to read results in a fairly short timeframe, is suitable to use before your period is due and it looks a lot smarter than some cheap tests. Ok so it doesn’t give a conception indicator as some more expensive brands do, but I keep track of my periods and don’t need this function and it’s not digital the results are not going to suddenly disappear. Which meant that I could save the test to show my finance later in the day, and indeed can keep the test in a keepsake box for when the baby is born. As with all pregnancy tests these are only 97% effective but in my experience this is usually only relevant with a negative result, I have had tests in the past that have come up negative when I’ve actually been pregnant but never the other way round.
