Mouthwash never used to be an essential for me, but I started using it last year and wouldn’t be without it now. It helps my mouth feel much fresher and cleaner, and has all sorts of benefits for my teeth. I’m not loyal to any particular brand, and am happy to buy whatever’s on offer.
I’ve been shopping in Superdrug a lot more recently, partly because of the new Beautycard. Last time I was in there I picked up two 500ml bottles of mouthwash for £2.99 as they were on special offer, though the standard price of £1.99 per bottle didn’t seem too bad either. I chose two different kinds of mouthwash: the one I’m going to review today is the Totalcare Tooth White Mouthwash. This particular mouthwash is designed to keep teeth naturally white, as well as help protect against plaque, freshen breath and strengthen and remineralise tooth enamel. It contains fluoride and apparently helps protect against cavities. The mouthwash is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and has been BUAV approved with the bunny logo – this means that it has not been tested on animals. This is a Superdrug own brand product and carries the message that Superdrug is against animal testing. The mouthwash can be recognised on the shelf by the white cap and the bright blue liquid inside.
Using this mouthwash is simple: just put some in the cap, rinse around your mouth and then rinse out your mouth with water. The mouthwash has a pleasantly minty taste that isn’t uncomfortably strong. It makes my mouth feel fresher for several hours. The problem with mouthwash is that it’s hard to judge its effectiveness. The product claims to protect against plaque and strengthen tooth enamel, but how do you tell? Certainly it fulfils its other claim which is to freshen breath. I certainly feel better when I use mouthwash (whether this brand or another).
This particular mouthwash is also designed to keep teeth naturally white. To be honest, I can’t say that my teeth were all that naturally white to begin with – they’re not disgusting, but I’ve considered using tooth whitening products in the past. The mouthwash doesn’t seem to have made that much difference, but then, I’ve only used one bottle so far. If I do ever try to whiten my teeth I might choose this mouthwash to try and maintain the effect. The big selling point of this mouthwash, for me, is that it is BUAV approved and is not tested on animals. However this is true of other Superdrug mouthwashes too. I would certainly buy this brand of mouthwash again, as it is good value for money – but not necessarily this particular one – unless I whiten my teeth!
