Having finished my degree I thought I deserved a holiday, so I took my girlfriend to the northeast coast of Italy for 10 days or so (see my opinions on the Cinque Terre). Now, it being summer and the mediterranean being notoriously hot, I picked up a 200ml bottle of superdrug's own brand lotion, and on the whole found it very good. I must admit that my reason for choosing the own-brand over the more well-known products was the price, which was considerably lower.

Now, superdrug sells its lotions in factor 5, 8, 15 and 20. Since I was expecting a LOT of sun in Italy, and since I generally dislike applying lotions to my skin, I chose factor 20. This was perfect for my needs: I found it give good, strong protection even when applied fairly thinly. It also seemed to last all day, though I was less confident after significant lengths of time spent swimming. All this meant that I needed relatively little of the lotion, and even had some left after the holiday. This I think is quite a useful point, as I don't like to carry more than I have to when backpacking.

The only quibble I have with the product - and it only really a quibble than a full-blown problem - is that it just too thick. Compared to other lotions, this one was more like a cream, coming out quite thick and viscous. My skin still absorbed it quite nicely, but it left a sort of greasy-cream feeling to my skin that I personally dislike. It was also quite difficult to get small amounts of the lotion from the squeezy bottle, and we frequently would get enough lotion for two from just one squeeze. This, again, I think is because of the lotions viscosity.

But, at the end of the day, it worked. I got a nice tan by not wearing it in the mornings and applying it at noon, and I am very happy that it has protected my skin from all those nasty UV rays. I'd certainly recommend it to all Ciao members as an alternative to the big brands.
