"Do you have clean Knickers on?"
I am the most accident prone person I know, therefore, I am at least twice as likely to be run over by a bus as most of you, which is why it is imperative to have clean undies at all times! And, gentlemen, we are not just talking 'Janet Reger delicates' here, pristine 'Calvin Kleins' are just as important. So how many of you can lay claim to having sparkling white smalls ???
I do all my washing in 'Surf Breeze' biological washing powder, I have done for many years now.Surf have been manufacturing and developing their products for over 50 years so I figured they must have something going for them !! With their range of very attractive packaging, they claim to be able to remove '99 top stains'..impressive, don't you think ?
******Packaging*****
What attracted me to the "Surf Breeze flavour", was the packaging. I have a blue and white kitchen, therefore the blue box fitted in with my colour scheme perfectly, and what's more, the large'Surf' lettering across the front of the box was the exact shade of deep blue that most of my appliances are, That impressed me greatly. There is a sky blue background with pretty 'floaty' white clouds across the front and some delicate yellow butterflies flitting across. In the top right hand corner is a pink blob with the declaration 'Removes 99 top stains, guaranteed' splashed across it (I am not a fan of 'pink' and personally would prefer this to be dark blue). On the back of the box are more white fluffy clouds and within each cloud is a list of stains this product claims to remove. They have listed all 99 and I will not bore you by listing all of them, however some mentioned are : Fag ash...Baby Pee...Bird Poo....Mucus...and for some reason 'fresh deodorant'?? Also, and very handy for me, it removes alcohol stains...you know the normal, Red Wine, but also Pina Colada...Tequila Sunrise....Alcopops...I think this is very handy. There is a guarantee that if this does not remove those stains you can claim your money back !!!The dosage instructions and ingredients are listed on the side and bottom of the pack.
NB....They do advise on the box that although they have listed '99' stains, they do remove far more than that.
******Usage******
Up to 15 washes can be obtained from the 1.10kg pack, it recommends you pour a cupful into the drawer, and not straight into the machine, or in a paste as a prewash. Most stains can be removed on a 40 deg wash but some tougher stains will need a 60 deg wash.
Prewashing....... will require an extra 100ml Handwashing... will need 110ml per 10 litres of water.
Different dosages depending on the hardness of water per standard wash are:
Soft water................................115ml Medium water.........................155ml Hard water...............................200ml
Surf is not recommended for Silks or Woollens. Never soak leather, clothes with metal fasteners or flame resistant articles.

My whites really do come out whiter than white, even on a normal 40 deg wash and on a standard coloured wash, the colours do not seem to fade. Now.....I'm sure there are some smart alecs reading this who are saying "Ha, if I get run over by a bus, it doesn't matter how dirty my pants or how long I've been wearing them, 'cos they're black'. Well, chaps, 'SMELL' is also very important, sticky, stale smelling undies do not impress the nurses !!!! Thankfully, this powder, leaves my clothes smelling lovely and fresh, at the risk of sounding cliched, they really do smell as fresh as a spring day, it is very difficult to describe in any other way, but imagine lying in a garden full of flowers with your eyes closed and you are half way there, in fact my undies smell good enough to 'eat' , and of that I am very proud !!
Softness is all important also, and , whilst not claiming any particular conditioning properties, I find that everything has a soft huggable feel so rarely do I need to use a separate conditioner.
I will just add that this powder dissolves completely in the drawer and does not tend to leave a gooey, splodgy mess behind, which some powders do.
******Ingredients and Technical stuff******
Now I will not list all the ingredients, but what is good about this is that Surf have explained what the ingredients actually do..i.e.....
"Soap, surfactants, phosphoates..........These are the things that remove stains "Enzymes"................................................Stain removing but also are what makes this a biological product "Polycarboxylate, zeolite........................Water softening properties "Brightening agents"..............................Things that make your whites bright (a little too helpful maybe)
I have very sensitive skin, but find that the chemical ingredients here, do not irritate my skin or cause any rashes.
Ok so overall a great product, one which I can happily recommend to all you accident prones out there. If you want any more information they have a novelty website, (listed below with telephone nos). This website is really quite pretty although very Pink, it has fluffy clouds and pretty little Hummingbirds, actively fluttering across the screen, there is washing information, hints, details of their new products and a fun and games section.

This retails at around 1.90 GBP for a 1.10 kg box. Very good value when you consider most top brands are over 2.00 GBP
So, there you have it, when I get run over by a bus, I will be happy in the knowledge that my undies are Bright, White, Huggably soft and mmmmmmmm gorgeous smelling !
...ditto
The boffins at Surf recommend that you use no more than 400ml of powder per wash (for cases of really heavy soiling) and for larger 6/7kg capacity machines you should add a minimum of 30ml extra powder to each of the afor mentioned amounts.
For pre-washing they advice you use 100ml of powder, and 110ml for hand washing purposes. By the way, these measurements relate to the ‘Surf Measuring Cup’, which I hasten to add DOES NOT come with this ... ...any washing detergent, but as Surf (Lemon Fresh) is my current choice of cleaner I knew this was going to be a test-and-a-half for it! Into the washer went the clothes, on of them pre-soaked, in went the powder and on the machine went at 40 degrees C. An hour later I ventured back into the kitchen and opened the machine’s door with some scepticism and I have to say a great deal of trepidation. Had Surf, with all it’s current stain-removing claims ...

Advantages: cheap powder that works Disadvantages: none
I usually buy Surf Washing Powder for my laundry in the new Sunshine Fragrance which I find leaves the laundry smelling fresh and clean. Great when it is on the beds as well - you can smell the freshness as you lay there.
As many of you know I have started doing the laundry for our hotel rather than sending it out - (Pete's brilliant idea to save money ! ) For this weeks laundry I needed some more washing powder so off I went to the Local Market ... ...them. I looked for the Surf Sunshine and there it was stood at the end of the row. But next to it was another box - still Surf but a new fragrance - Tropical. Hmm I had a quick sniff at the box and was amazed by the strength of the fragrance inside. Flowery yet a hint of something else that I can't quite put my finger on. Price marked at £1.39 for 1.10kg seemed great value as this size box is usually £1.99. Straight in the basket it went.

Beetroot
Tomato Juice
Egg yolk
Felt tip pens
Baked bean
Fresh deodorant
Syrup
Strawberry ice cream
Soy sauce
Blackcurrant jam

...box of automatic 'Sun Fresh' Surf for £1.69. It makes sure your whites come up really white, and you won't need to wash your laundry twice. It leaves your clothes smelling fresh, and gives you the outdoor freshness you want in clothes.

An enzyme is a stain removal ingredient which works at low temperatues. The enzyme only works on biological products, not non-biological ones. (The Surf I bought is biological!).

Advantages: Really fresh Disadvantages: Bit pricey
...is this product well simply Surf Washing tablets. Now washing up powder is all well and good but I don't know about you but my washing machine is clogged up in those little trays with old washing powder that has not been taken into the wash and although I was cleaning it out regular it still kept happening so my mum said to try using Surf tablets so in I went to tesco's on my next shopping trip and they had them at £3.79 for 16 tablets yes a bit ... ...them a go. My next choice was do I buy Citrus orange or Lemon so as they had a buy one get one free I got one of each. Inside the box was a little drawstring bag and two tablets in each little clear bag. I took two tablets as instructed on the box and chewed them for ages only joking then stuck them in the little bag and bunged them in with the wash and no need to add conditioner as the yellow for lemon or orange for citrus layers are the conditioner ...

Advantages: mighty fragrance Disadvantages: Can use too much
I usually try to Purchase cheaper branded washingpowder / liquid because they can get quite expensive. I have never really been a fan of SurfWashingpowders because i could never get a real fragrance from the washing once the clothes had dried and was constantly trying to improve this by adding fabric softener into the wash.
When my husband came home with the bottle of small and mighty I was dissapointed in the size of it and didn't really have any faith. I must say, I was plesently surprised after the first load. I was dubious at the samll amount of liquid I had to put in, but my washing came out clean and smelt fantastic. The smell ligered in the clothes after drying and they were still nice and fresh when re-worn days later.
I have not bought Fabric Conditioner for a long time now, but the price of small & mightly has gone ...
Advantages: Kind to everything Disadvantages: Not as 'smelly' as other chemically enhanced brands
Ok, so what now? I have a vegetable box scheme, recycle almost all my household waste, compost, shop ethically; i.e. boycott Tesco and take all my mini breaks in the UK. What more could I possibly do to be greener? There are a few things that I needed to work on, namely finding alternative cleaning and washing products.
I'll admit I've been reluctant to change from Surfwashingpowder and my Co-op own brand softener as I do like the smell not to mention the price! But this was before I read up about the toxins and chemicals that go into these products. This was enough for me to change to Ecover quick smart.
Ecover is the obvious choice for anyone wanting to live a more sustainable way of life, this sustainability should be promoted throughout the country, by our government, not just for people who are willing to pay a little more ...
I have very sensitive skin so i havt to watch what iam using to wash my clothes.Since i can remember my mother has used surfwashingpowder and its always been ok.When i moved out and got my own house i continued using it. Recently i have found that it hasnt been removing stains from my son clothes, i found that i was having to wash his clothes three and four times and they were fading alot.I tried steeping them and sometimes i couldnt get simple stains out like bean juice, and had to throw the clothes away. Then one day my friend recommended persil washing liquid to me.I was hesitant to use it just incase it irritated our sensitive skin.I got a little bit from my friend to try and found out it is fine on our skins and it is great on getting my sons stains out.also it makes our clothes smell lovely.I get it from my local supermarket for 2 ...
