The first ever tour to England that involved a test here was by an Australian Aboriginal team back in 1868, even then the South London ground expressing its cosmopolitan attitude and credentials. In fact documents show that a game called 'creckett' was played there 500 years ago. For me it's our number one ground now, the increasingly stuffy and expensive Lords cricketing experience ... more

Surrey with a fringe on top

Advantages: Plenty of internationals in current squad
Disadvantages: County form disrupted by test calls

The Surrey side of the 1950s was perhaps one of the finest county sides ever. The team won seven consecutive county championships. The team consisted of great players such as Ken Barrington, Peter May, Alec + Eric Bedser, Jim Laker, Tony Lock, Peter Loader etc. Ken Barrington - was a hard-hitting batsman. He even managed the England touring team to the West Indies in 1980-81. On that tour there was the infamous Robin Jackman affair, which needed ...
...this great team and the Surrey of today cannot be made due to the large amount of one-day cricket being played nowadays. Nowadays the job of the bowlers is to restrict the run rate. Many years ago it was to capture wickets. One-day cricket has also affected batting technique. This is the main reason why test matches rarely go into the 5th day. Over the years Surrey has brought in quality overseas players: Intikhab Alam – a great off-spinner. ...

The Oval All-Stars

Advantages: Good strength in depth, excellent bowler in Saqlain
Disadvantages: England call-ups can weaken the team on paper

...2 years it looks like Surrey will be close again this year. Although they are not top (yet) and certainly not running away with it the return of Saqlain Mushtaq now the Pakistan tour has finished will give a timely boost to the side. Surrey are now captained by Adam Hollioake and he still looks to fulfil his early promise and secure a place in the England team. He is possibly the next England captain in waiting if Nasser Hussain either starts to ...
...a complete test player. Surrey have a strong opening pair in Mark Butcher and Ian Ward. Butcher has been having a strong season this year perhaps due to the additional pressure for places at the county. Ward has now deservedly broken into the England team and can be a prolific accumulator of runs. The acquisition of Mark Ramprakash from Middlesex adds further strength to an already strong batting line up and the move has already shown dividends ...

Surrey Super Surrey

Advantages: Good main squad of 16 players
Disadvantages: Might be stuck without a spinner soon, still playing division 2 1dayers

Current county champions Surrey, who would bet against them winning it again. They have a team that excites with Ali Brown and Ian Ward providing the fireworks then batsmen like Alec Stewart, Graham Thorpe, Mark Butcher and the Hollioake brothers behind them. Martin Bicknell (how has he only managed a few appearances for England) and Alex Tudor lead the bowling attack backed up by Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury. Plus there is youth comming through ...

Four timer for Butcher

Advantages: great feat, well done
Disadvantages: none

...his magnificent four timer for Surrey against Derbyshire today. It's brought cricket back into the forefront of the media, just before the Test Match starts. It was very interesting listening to Radio 5 live this afternoon when they ran the story of his four wickets in four balls. They were trying to figure out a descriptive word for the feat. Obviously three wickets on the trot is a 'HAT TRICK' So what's four on the trot. Listeners rang in, emailed ...

Andy Flintoff

Advantages: Very confident
Disadvantages: None that I could see

I have just watched Andy Flintoff hit a magnificent 134 not out to secure a Lancs victory over Surrey in one of the NatWest quarter finals. Now the question has to be asked. Why have the selectors overlooked him for the next Test. He is as worthy as Graeme Hick to be in the side and I would look to Flintoff before Hick every time. He is strong, confident and certainly knows where the boundary lies. Come on England, do the decent thing and give him a sustained run in the England test side. ...

Is Salisbury the right man for the tour?

Advantages: Useful obdurate batsman
Disadvantages: Lacks penetration required in Test Cricket

Ian Salisbury has had a very good season for Surrey in tandem with Saqlain Mushtaq, and there is no denying that with the bat he can knock valuable runs. However whether he is the best choice for the tour is not so clear cut. Thus far he has not bowled with the necessary penetration in test cricket, and although he is the best leg spinner in England, and as a fellower ex-leg spinner I am glad to see one in the team, I am not sure if he will get the wickets. I was also surprised that there was no place for Phil Tufnell, given that he is consistent, although his batting lets him down and possibly he has overstepped the mark once too often off the pitch. Whether the selectors will end up with egg on their face or not, only time will tell, but it would be a shame if after progress made this summer, there is no continuation ...
