She was born in Surrey in a town called Leatherhead and her father was a stockbroker. She was educated in a school in Sutton.
Her father died when she was young in the second world war 11 despite that her childhood was a happy one.
Later she studied at the King;s College in London where she got a law degree and in 1964 she went to live in the United States as a secretary in New York. There she married Joseph Howatch. After a year of their marriage that was when she began her writing career. It did not take her long to start making a career for her self and she began with her gothic novels The first novel was published in 1965 and this was called the Darkest Shore .1971 she and her husband had a baby daughter and a few years after that in the year 1975 they separated and then she moved back to England and Republic of Ireland in the years 1976=1980 and back again to England for good. In 1971 she had her first family saga published which is called Penmarric and it certainly was amazing story.
When she did once again settled back in England in Salisbury and after awhile she started to become attached to Salsibury;s Catherdral where she started to learn about the Anglican Faith. Then she found inspiration to write her novels which were the Starbridge series. This series of novels were very popular I have only been able to read the first one so when there is time I hope to read them all.
In 1984 she began her Church of England series and in the mid eighties she found she had an emptiness and became an anglician which then made her realise she was spiritually empty even though she had everything in the material way.. So once she was converted she gave a lot of her things away and now lives very simply and she took also a vow of celibacy and she now lives in London.
In her later years she was able to use some of her earnings from these books to set up an academic post which is called " Starbridge Lecturer in Natural Science and Theology in the Faculty of Divinity of Cambridge University specialising in science and religion and the first person to hold this postion was a gentleman called Reverend Dr Fraser Watts who was a theologian and psychologist. She also was a lecturer there in 1992 also a Honoroary Fellow of the University of Wales at Lampeter and Sarum College which is in Salisbury where she owed so much of her success from her later novels.
Again a very interesting person and I have enjoyed learning about how started out in writing her novels and where she got her inspirations from.
Advantages: Very well-written, fast-paced, exciting, thought-provoking Disadvantages: Rather sleazy, some bad language, could be disturbing for some
I didn't think I was going to like this book very much. It's not the kind of book I would normally read, as the main character is a male prostitute in London. I knew this because I'm on a mailing list for people who enjoy SusanHowatch's books, and although I'd avoided reading any spoiler discussions before I read 'The Heartbreaker', I couldn't help knowing the subject matter. I also knew that it was rather sleazy, and that several people considered it distinctly unpleasant.
But I do like this author's writing, and I had read and enjoyed the other two books in the St Benet's trilogy, focussed loosely around an Anglican healing centre in London. So I re-read those, and then embarked on 'The Heartbreaker'.
The novel begins in the voice of Carta Graham, who was the main character in 'The High Flyer' (second book ...
Advantages: Original and fascinating subject matter, well-written, good characterisation Disadvantages: Subject matter may put some people off - which is a shame
style may come as a shock to readers who have already become used to Carta?s respectable tones, but as time goes on, even the two characters? tones of voice become more closely aligned, making the book a more comfortable read.
Each chapter is broken up into small snippets, making the book immensely readable. Carta?s sections are broken up by ordered Roman numerals, whereas Gavin?s are simply separated by stars, once again showing us the difference between the characters. Allowing both characters to give their perspective on events ensures that we get to know them both in some depth. Both are surprisingly likeable, and SusanHowatch has developed them well. There are other interesting and well-described characters in the story as well ? notably, Lewis, another Minister to whom Carta, and eventually Gavin, become close, and Susanne ...
Penmarric is a family saga written by SusanHowatch. This was her first family based saga which the setting is in Cornwall. It was written in 1971 it tells us how the family called the Castallacks relates to each other in this amazing house Penmarric in this Cornish village where tin mining was in full flourish and the family become wealthy because of the tin mine industry. It spans from nineteenth and twentieth century and how the family evolves during this period. It begins with Mark Castallack bringing his bride home to Penmarric and her name is Janna, he was a very sensitive person and its story is spread over three generations.
It was interesting to read about how the characters in the book related to each other not always in a positive away. I found this a very compelling read once you pick it up you just want to read it to ...
