Susan Howatch was born 14 July in the year 1940. She is a well established writer and she is mainly known for her family sagas. In her much later novels that had a religious and philosospical flavour to them.
She was born in Surrey in a town called Leatherhead and her father was a stockbroker. She was educated in a school in Sutton.
Her father died when she was young in the second world war 11 despite that her childhood was a happy one.
Later she studied at the King;s College in London where she got a law degree and in 1964 she went to live in the United States as a secretary in New York. There she married Joseph Howatch. After a year of their marriage that was when she began her writing career. It did not take her long to start making a career for her self and she began with her gothic novels The first novel was published in 1965 and this was called the Darkest Shore .1971 she and her husband had a baby daughter and a few years after that in the year 1975 they separated and then she moved back to England and Republic of Ireland in the years 1976=1980 and back again to England for good. In 1971 she had her first family saga published which is called Penmarric and it certainly was amazing story.
When she did once again settled back in England in Salisbury and after awhile she started to become attached to Salsibury;s Catherdral where she started to learn about the Anglican Faith. Then she found inspiration to write her novels which were the Starbridge series. This series of novels were very popular I have only been able to read the first one so when there is time I hope to read them all.
In 1984 she began her Church of England series and in the mid eighties she found she had an emptiness and became an anglician which then made her realise she was spiritually empty even though she had everything in the material way.. So once she was converted she gave a lot of her things away and now lives very simply and she took also a vow of celibacy and she now lives in London.
In her later years she was able to use some of her earnings from these books to set up an academic post which is called " Starbridge Lecturer in Natural Science and Theology in the Faculty of Divinity of Cambridge University specialising in science and religion and the first person to hold this postion was a gentleman called Reverend Dr Fraser Watts who was a theologian and psychologist. She also was a lecturer there in 1992 also a Honoroary Fellow of the University of Wales at Lampeter and Sarum College which is in Salisbury where she owed so much of her success from her later novels.
Again a very interesting person and I have enjoyed learning about how started out in writing her novels and where she got her inspirations from.
